Yellowjackets’ Swimming, Both Soccer Squads Get Their First Wins

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The East Haven-Wilbur Cross girls’ swimming and diving team opened its season with a trio of meets last week and secured the program’s first victory as co-op squad by defeating Guilford.

The Yellowjackets started their season with a meet at North Haven on Sept. 12 and took a 94-74 defeat. East Haven-Cross posted wins in three individual events, as well as a pair of relays. Laura Rosado won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.66, Angelica Blaze won the 100 backstroke in 1:20.57, and Alora McCarrol won the 100 breaststroke at 1:20.91. In the relays, the 200 freestyle relay team of McCarroll, Gina DiVerniero, Jung Joo Kim, and Bedoya won at 1:56.87, and the 400 freestyle relay group of Blaze, Isabella Furino, Jennyfer Jarrin, and Krissia Flores took first with a time of 5:43.74.

East Haven-Cross was back in the pool the very next day and defeated Guilford 86-75 in a historic win for the program. Individual victories were earned by Rosado in the 100 free (55.31) and 500 free (5:59.5), along with Daniella Bedoya in the 100 fly (1:09), Kim in the 100 backstroke (1:08.19), and McCarroll in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.68). The 200 medley relay team of Kim, Syreena Melendez, DiVerniero, and Rosado won with a time of 2:07.85, while the 200 freestyle relay team of Melendez, DiVerniero, Jarrin, and Rosado recorded a time of 1:56.40 to place first.

East Haven-Cross closed its week by taking an 89-74 home loss to Sacred Heart Academy on Sept. 15. Rosado won the 200 individual medley (2:17.62) and the 500 freestyle (5:33.26), Kim took first in the 100 backstroke (1:07.61) and the 100 freestyle (58.62), and Bedoya won the 100 butterfly in 1:04.91 for the Yellowjackets.

Boys’ Soccer

East Haven earned its first victory with interim Head Coach Ryan Harrold by netting a 2-1 home win against Harding on Sept. 15. The win raised the Yellowjackets’ record to 1-3 this year.

In the victory, Amadeo Bugatti opened the scoring for East Haven with a goal at the 15:20 mark of the first half on an assist from Kevin Medina. With less than a minute to go in the half, Nicholas Harrold netted the game-winner on an assist from Gustavo Calle.

Prior to the win, East Haven took a pair of losses last week. On Sept. 11, Law defeated East Haven 6-2. The following day, the Yellowjackets lost 9-1 against Career-Hillhouse.

Girls’ Soccer

The Yellowjackets picked up their first victory with new Head Coach Jake Hackett last week. On Sept. 12, East Haven went into Hamden and came away with a 2-1 win.

The Easties needed to battle back to win this one. With her team down 1-0, Haley Montesanto scored on an assist from Jordan Kikosicki to tie the game, after which Jenna Pane netted the game-winner off a corner sent in by Isabella Pilato. Angelina Munoz recorded 12 saves in net to preserve the victory as the Easties’ defense continued its strong play throughout the game.

The Yellowjackets closed out the week with an 8-1 loss at Hand, moving its record to 1-2 to start the year.

Football

East Haven took a 38-0 loss on the road against Bunnell on Sept. 15. The Yellowjackets return to the gridiron for their home opener when they host Lyman Hall at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22.
