Plenty of Wins for the Guilford Indians This Week

Boys’ Soccer

The Guilford boys’ soccer team opened its campaign by recording a trio of victories last week. The Indians stand with an overall record of 3-0 and have a mark of 1-0 in the SCC Oronoque Division.

Guilford first bested Bacon Academy 2-1 behind two goals from Eric Lepeak in its season opener on Sept. 11.

The Indians came back the next day and defeated Fairfield Prep by the final tally of 2-0. Tom Mitzelfelt and Mete Yanbul scored Guilford’s goals in the victory.

Guilford then edged Cross by a 2-1 score on Sept. 15.

Field Hockey

The Indians are now 2-0-1 this fall after collecting a pair of wins last week.

Guilford started its week by playing to a 2-2 draw against Hamden on Sept. 12. The Indians later blanked Mercy 4-0 on Sept. 15.

Volleyball

The Indians claimed victories against North Haven, Sheehan, and Hand in last week’s action. Guilford swept North Haven 3-0 on Sept. 11, downed Sheehan 3-1 (27-29, 25-22, 25-16, 25-13) two days later, and then swept division rival Hand 3-0 on Sept. 15. Guilford improved to 4-0 overall and is 1-0 in SCC Oronoque Division play.

Facing Sheehan, Emma Appleman had 13 kills, 11 digs, five aces for the Indians. Amanda King added nine kills and eight digs, Trinity Flynn contributed 11 kills and three blocks, Julia Hyman handed out 30 assists to go with seven digs and three aces, Hunter Halbouer had three kills and seven blocks, and Juliet Young punched up 11 digs for the Indians.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Indians opened their dual-meet season strong by notching a quad-meet sweep for an early record of 3-0.

Guilford defeated host Cross by the score of 18-44 to go with 15-50 victories versus Law and Branford last week. Jacqui Guerra won the race with a time of 20:53, Meredith Bloss was runner-up (20:54), Gianna Siciliano took fourth (22:15), Alexis Sattler finished fifth (22:17), Ellie Wiesler followed in sixth (22:36), Emma Bonz was seventh (22:37), and Claire Keanna finished eighth (22:52) for the Indians.

Boys’ Cross Country

Guilford had a quad-meet to open its dual-meet campaign and earned wins against Cross, Law, and Branford to start the year at 3-0.

The Indians posted victories against Cross (23-35), Law (15-47), and Branford (16-47) at the meet. Elijah Dillon finished as the runner-up by running a time of 17:45, Brennan Kaisen placed third (18:01), Ben Crair followed in fourth (18:05), Brendan O’Callahan came in sixth (18:20), and Will Smith finished eighth (18:37) for Guilford.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Guilford competed in a pair of meets last week and took defeats versus Hamden and East Haven-Cross.

Guilford dropped a 95-71 decision to Hamden on Sept. 11. The Indians later took an 86-75 loss against East Haven-Cross on Sept. 13.
