Morgan Boys’ Soccer Nets Two More Wins; Daley Grabs Gold at Portland Invitational

Boys’ Soccer

The Morgan boys’ soccer squad hit the pitch for two games last week and was victorious in both of them. The Huskies are undefeated so far with a record of 3-0 in the 2017 campaign.

On Sept. 11, Morgan played Old Lyme on the road and won the game in decisive fashion by a score of 5-0. The Huskies put the Wildcats under duress by taking 14 shots on net in the contest. All five of Morgan’s goals came in the first half. Senior Juan Avila struck first at the eight-minute mark, sophomore Zach Tuccitto scored two quick goals in minutes 21 and 22, Avila struck again in minute 25, and the Huskies’ final score came from senior Aedan Mahoney in the 29th minute. Calvin Jackson had two assists, while Ford Pender, James Saturno, and Avila each had one for Morgan, which posted a 5-0 shutout of North Branford later in the week.

Girls’ Soccer

The Huskies took a pair of defeats last week to move to 1-2 on the season.

On Sept. 12, the Huskies were at Old Lyme to face the Wildcats and lost 2-0. Morgan’s goalkeeper Rebecca Cockley stopped nine shots in the loss.

On Sept. 15, Morgan traveled to North Branford took a 2-1 defeat. Courtney Viglione scored a goal that was assisted by Issy Ranaudo for the Huskies.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Morgan girls’ cross country team took part in the Portland Invitational on Sept. 12. Senior Kate Daley came in first place for the Huskies by running a time of 20 minutes and 29 seconds. Daley was tops in a field that featured 70 runners from six teams to earn gold on the day.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Huskies were at the Portland Invitational last week, where they competed against five other schools. Freshman Chayse Lofgren medaled for Morgan by coming in fifth place among 87 runners behind time of 19.00 minutes.

Volleyball

The Huskies played their first three games of the season on the road last week and got out to a solid start by winning two of them for an early 2-1 record.

On Sept. 11, Morgan headed to Haddam-Killingworth to battle the Cougars and lost 3-0. Then on Sept. 13, the Huskies faced the Wildcats in Old Lyme and swept them by the score of 3-0. Two days later, Morgan was at North Branford and prevailed in another 3-0 sweep.

Field Hockey

Morgan kicked off its season with two games last week, tying one and losing the other to stand at 0-1-1 to start the year.

On Sept. 12, the Huskies hosted Valley Regional at the Indian River Complex and played to a 1-1 tie. Aryn McQuarrie scored an unassisted goal for Morgan, while Abigail Gordon made 13 saves in net.

Two days later, Morgan took a 7-2 loss to North Branford. McQuarrie scored on an assist from Jordan McMillan, who later netted an unassisted goal. Gordon had 10 saves in this game.

Football

The Huskies were on the road to face Valley Regional-Old Lyme in Deep River last week and lost the contest 48-7.

The Warriors scored the game’s first touchdown to take a 6-0 lead, after which Huskies’ junior Bryce Thomas returned the kickoff 84 yards to put the Huskies up 7-6 following the extra point. However, Valley-Old Lyme struck back again with another touchdown and scored the game’s final 42 points on its way to the victory.
