Branford Volleyball Gets First Win; Boys’ Soccer Takes Two

Volleyball

The Branford volleyball team picked up its first victory with new Head Coach Cody Michaels when the Hornets won by a 3-1 score at Lauralton Hall in a SCC Quinnipiac Division matchup on Sept. 14. The Hornets also lost to East Haven and Shelton last week and have a record of 1-3 on the young season.

Branford began its week with a road match against East Haven on Sept. 11 and took a 3-0 defeat. Then on Sept. 13, the Hornets hosted Shelton and lost by the score of 3-1.

Two days after that, Branford played at Lauralton Hall in its SCC Quinnipiac Division opener and defeated the Crusaders 3-1 with set scores of 24-26, 25-21, 25-23, and 25-14. Marisa Minore had 13 kills, while Diana Karosas posted 10 kills for the Hornets. Erin O’Brien handed out 32 assists to go with four aces, and Taryn Broughal added six blocks to help Branford get its first win.

Boys’ Soccer

The Hornets had a pair of contests in Wallingford last week and won both of them to stand with a record of 3-0 this year. Branford netted a victory at Lyman Hall before prevailing at Sheehan.

Branford began its week with a road game versus Lyman Hall and routed the Trojans by the final score of 7-2. Two days, later the Hornets were at Sheehan for their SCC Housatonic Division matchup against the Titans and prevailed by a 3-0 tally.

Girls’ Soccer

Branford was home for two contests last week and took a pair of defeats to drop to 0-2-1 on the year. The Hornets lost to Sheehan by a 2-1 score on Sept. 12 and then lost to Mercy 2-0 in a SCC Hammonasset matchup on Sept. 15.

Branford trailed Sheehan 1-0 when senior captain Taylor Brown scored to tie the game for the Hornets. The Titans went on to score the go-ahead goal with 38 seconds left.

In the previous week’s action, Branford rallied from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 2-2 tie with North Haven. Brown scored the first goal on a breakaway in the first half, and freshman Alayna Boileau tied the game by netting a goal with nine minutes remaining.

Football

Branford hit the road to face New Fairfield in a non-conference contest on Sept. 15 and dropped a 34-8 decision to move to 0-2 for the season.

New Fairfield scored one touchdown in the first quarter and two TDs in the second quarter to build a 21-0 halftime lead against the Hornets. New Fairfield added another touchdown in the third to make it 28-0. Twenty seconds into the fourth quarter, Jackson Seward scored on a 13-yard touchdown run, and Branford trailed 28-7 following Teddy Gionteris’s extra point kick. New Fairfield came back to score the final touchdown of the game late in the fourth quarter for the 34-8 final.

Daniel Thomas caught three passes for 53 yards for the Hornets. On defense, Aiden MacNeil had a sack, a forced fumble, and six tackles, including two for a loss. Seward made seven tackles, Lucas Blondell had six tackles, and Cameron Mills recovered a fumble for Branford.

Field Hockey

Branford was on the road for a showdown against Cheshire in a rematch of last year’s SCC Tournament final. Cheshire squeaked out a 2-1 win against the Hornets, who had defeated the Rams by that same score to win the conference title in 2016.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Hornets had a quad-meet at East Rock Park last week. The Hornets dropped decisions against Cross (18-41), Law (26-32), and Guilford (16-47) on Sept. 12.

Girls’ Cross Country

Branford went up against Guilford, Cross, and Law in a quad-match at East Rock Park on Sept. 12. The Hornets lost to Cross (15-48), Law (20-41), and Guilford (15-50) at the meet.
