The Haddam-Killingworth football team began the 2017 season with a resounding victory by defeating SMSA-University-Classical 49-32 on Sept. 9. H-K amassed 441 total yards of offense—all on the ground—and had three running backs gain at least 100 yards to go with touchdowns from four different players. Tobey Callender carried the ball 20 times for 149 yards and three touchdowns for the Cougars. Kevin Dougherty had 20 rushes for 103 yards and two TDs, while Jake Frith ran 20 times for 146 yards and a score.

H-K jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter and responded following every touchdown by the opposition. The Cougars scored late in the first half to open up a 28-12 halftime lead and then scored a touchdown following a 65-yard drive that consumed almost eight minutes of the fourth quarter to put the game away. Dalton Brown intercepted a pass and scored a 21-yard rushing TD for H-K.

“The kids did everything we asked of them tonight,” said Head Coach Mike Baklik. “They capitalized on all of our early breaks and they responded every time SMSA tried to get back in the game.”

H-K next travels to Coginchaug High School to face Coginchaug/Hale-Ray (1-0) on Saturday, Sept. 16 with the kickoff at 1 p.m.
