09/08/2017 12:00 AMDuck Island Yacht Club (DIYC) on the Patchogue River in Westbrook has been selected as the host of the 2017 JY15 North American Championship Regatta. The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 23 and Sunday, Sept. 24 with multiple races being held on both days beginning at 11 a.m. Trophies will be awarded to the top overall finishers, the top junior skipper, the top parent-and-child team, and the top female skipper at the regatta. There will be reduced fees for youth teams.
The DIYC has been hosting one design racing in various boats since 1932 and has hosted the JY15 Connecticut State Championships since 2004. The racing area is surrounded by three breakwaters and Duck Island, providing a consistent breeze, minimal currents, and modest waves in most directions. The club also has a large dry-storage parking lot, a 1.5-ton crane for launch, and an easy ramp launching from the parking lot onto floating docks for JY’s. The elevated clubhouse has an expansive deck and a large interior with showers.
