Nine colorful Sunfish sails were again seen racing around the buoys on Island Bay off of Leetes Island on Aug. 26. The occasion was the annual Bean Pot Regatta hosted by the Leetes Island Association of Retired Sailors (LIARS) and junior Fledglings in Beautiful Boats Enjoying Rough Seas (FIBBERS) to honor the event’s late founder and commodore, Jay Folger. Sunfish fleet No. 267 has been actively racing off Leetes Island since 1969.

The competition among the nine doubles teams was fun and friendly with occasional bumps proving no big deal. At the memorial happy hour celebration, attending LIARS alumni were acknowledged and Folger’s widow, Betty Jane Folger, presented the Bean Pot to first place overall winners Paul Odegard and junior crew Sam Beres. With the alternating driver requirement, Beres won his race, thus clinching his team’s win. Second-place honors went to Jim Hedleston and seven year-old first-time sailor Sophia Beres. The third-place father-and-daughter team of Regis Conlon and Jen Conlon was separated by only one point.
