Cougars Split a Doubleheader Against the Pirates

The Shoreline Cougars’ baseball team played a doubleheader against the Connecticut Pirates at Haddam-Killingworth Middle School on July 23 and grabbed a split to bring its record to 5-14 on the season. The Cougars won the first game 6-2 and lost the nightcap 2-1.

In the first game, the Pirates got on the board early with a run in the first inning and added another in the third. The Cougars grabbed their first run in the third inning, and the score stayed 2-1 heading into the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars unloaded for five runs to take a 6-2 lead that held up as the final.

Owen Marica had three hits and drove in three runs, Ross Meglin had three hits and drove in two runs, while Scott Masse added an RBI base hit for Shoreline.

In the second game, the Pirates plated a run in the first inning, after which the Cougars responded with a run in the third. The scored remained tied until the final inning, when the Pirates scored a run to walk off with the win. Mike Leffingwell pitched a strong game for the Cougars by striking out seven in 6.1 innings.
