The first annual Guilford Amateur Golf Championship teed off at Guilford Lakes Golf Course on the beautiful morning of July 22. The 30 participants at the event competed in an 18-hole medal play tournament. The first nine holes were played from the white tees, and the second nine were played from the blue tees. Awards were presented for low gross and low net, as well as closest to the pin on the ninth hole. Skip Perkins won for low gross on the par-55 golf course with an 18-hole total of 60. The low net winner was Jon Motzer with a score of 51. John Sondej was closest to the pin on hole No. 9.

Prior to the tournament, golfers enjoyed a breakfast that included doughnuts and coffee. The $5 entry fee also included a fully catered lunch that featured hot dogs and prime sirloin burgers. Sondej offered his services on the grill and put his own spin on backyard barbecuing. Upon the tournament’s conclusion, an awards ceremony was held on the porch. A plaque will be hung in the clubhouse that honors each yearly winner in both the gross and net divisions.

Guilford Lakes Golf Course’s new PGA Professional Mike Papp said the tournament was a great success and that the participants had a terrific time.

“The course was in its usual pristine condition with the greens rolling at 10 on the stimp meter and a tricky pin placement on 9,” said Papp. “Next year, we will have a larger field with a probable waiting list. We are hoping to attract both, women, and junior golfers. We are also planning a 36-hole fall event with the name, date, and format to be determined.”
