Local Youths Go Platinum with Astra Studios

On July 14 and 15, students from Astra Studio of Dance and Performing Arts in Old Saybrook attended in the Platinum Performing Arts National Competition. The students participated in masters classes in jazz, musical theatre, contemporary, and tap, and then competed against schools from Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York.

Astra’s junior team earned both a high gold and a special award called Classy and Sassy for its routine, Dear Future Husband. The junior lyrical routine earned a high gold, while junior tap earned a gold. The senior team earned a gold for its jazz routine, and a contemporary duo earned a high gold.

Emma Golembeski, a member of the junior team, received a special Backstage Director’s Choice Award for her lyrical routine. Golembeski was singled out for this award from a field of more than 130 participants at the event. Junior soloist Jillian Pernal earned a high gold and tied for fifth place overall for her contemporary solo routine, Sound of Silence.
