Guilford Senior Legion Clinches State Tournament Berth

The Guilford Senior Legion baseball squad improved to 16-9 in Zone 3 play and clinched a berth in the State Tournament following a recent stretch of stellar performances. Post 48 is in fourth place in the Zone 3 standings entering the final week of the regular season. The State Tournament begins with Southern Division Sectional play on Saturday, July 15.

Guilford lost by a 9-1 final against Meriden on June 29, but Post 48 came back to edge out Meriden, 7-6, on July 1. Kevin Cargos pitched the first 5.2 innings for Guilford, after which Gray Stephens threw the final 1.1 innings.

Post 48 then routed Prospect-Beacon Falls by a 12-0 score on July 3. Matt McGrath and Jack Stand shared the pitching duties for Guilford in the victory. Guilford later picked up a forfeit win over Prospect-Beacon Falls for a game that was slated to be played on July 5.

After that, Post 48 emerged triumphant over Wallingford, 3-1, on July 6. Guilford then shut out Wallingford 3-0 on July 8 behind a complete game performance from Cargos.
