On June 25, the Branford Hornets U-14 softball squad won the 2017 Firecracker Tournament at The Pit in East Haven. The Hornets took two out of three games against a tough East Haven squad to come away with the championship. Marzia Johnson was the anchor for Branford in Game 1 of the series and received a tournament game ball for pitching a shutout. Paige Richardson also received a tournament game ball for her timely hitting and multiple RBI.

“East Haven has a solid team that is well coached; you can tell. They hit well and were fundamentally sound on defense, giving us all we could handle. The Foxon League were gracious hosts and we can’t thank them enough,” Hornets’ Head Coach Mark Johnson said. “I am so proud of our girls stepping up to the challenge and performing the way they did on [June 25]. It was hot, then we got rained on, then it was hot again, but our kids stayed mentally tough and focused. What a great group of kids we have here in Branford.”
