89ers Beat Branford Twice to Move to 4-3

The East Haven Senior Legion baseball team won a pair of games against rival Branford last week to improve to 4-3 in Zone 2 action and keep pace with the rest of the division. East Haven is currently in a three-way tie for fourth place with New Haven and North Haven, while Orange is in first at 7-1, with Hamden and Stratford both sitting in second at 4-2.

On June 20, the 89ers posted a 5-3 victory versus Branford behind a solid outing on the mound from Jake Ferrara. Ferrara scattered five hits through 5.1 scoreless innings in the victory. Offensively, Tyler Leone had two hits, including a double, with two RBI; Frank Longley also contributed with two hits, and Ferrara and Nick Kraszewski each had a hit with an RBI for East Haven.

The next day, East Haven routed Branford by the final score of 14-1. Mike Mancuso was the winning pitcher for the 89ers as he threw a two-hitter and struck out five. Kraszewski clubbed a three-run home run in the first inning to ignite East Haven’s offense, which scored four runs in the first and seven more in the second. Leone finished with two hit and two RBI, while Ferrera and Gabe Longley also supplied run-producing hits.

On June 22, East Haven and Branford played a game that was suspended due to darkness with the score tied 5-5 entering the eighth inning. The game will resume on Monday, June 26.
