The Guilford Senior Legion baseball team put three wins in the books during its first two weeks of the season, including a big victory over Zone 3 rival Cheshire that marked its first loss of the year. Overall, Guilford is 3-6 thus far this summer.

Guilford took a 1-0 loss to Meriden on June 14. Tommy Cattaneo pitched five scoreless innings before Meriden broke through for its run. With one out in the top of the sixth, Devyn McCarty launched a fly ball that landed just out of the diving grasp of the right fielder. McCarty made it to third with a triple. With a drawn-in infield, pitcher Jack Rich helped his own cause with an RBI single for a 1-0 Meriden lead. Post 48 threatened in the home seventh as Charlie Danaher opened the frame with Guilford’s only hit of the night on a double to the right-center field gap. Rich settled in to strike out the next batter before retiring the final two batters, stranding Danaher at second.

Post 48 then split a doubleheader with Cheshire on June 17, winning 8-7 before taking a 6-2 loss. Jack Strand (5 innings) and Logan Hitchcock (2 innings) pitched for Guilford, which held off a Cheshire rally in the last half of the seventh to come away with the big win.

The previous week, Guilford took a 9-1 loss to Madison on June 7 and then dropped 8-0 and 8-1 decisions to Middletown on June 1. After that, Guilford blanked Prospect-Beacon Falls 5-0 on June 11 and then completed the double dip sweep with a 17-1 triumph. Jack Strand pitched for Post 48 in the 5-0 win, and Tyler Rogers pitched in the 17-1 victory.

Post 48 then split a doubleheader with Bethel on June 17, winning 4-2 and losing 3-2. In the win, Guilford plated two runs in the top of the seventh before Bethel scored a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh for its victory.

In the previous week, Post 48 began the year with a doubleheader sweep of Waterbury and a win over Branford. Guilford scored two convincing shutouts on June 10 against Waterbury, prevailing by 19-0 and 10-0 finals. Post 48 then took down non-zone foe Branford, 6-3, the next day. Casey Johnson and Michael Stebbins took to the mound for Guilford in the Waterbury contests. JP Murtaugh, James Walker, and Kevin Ciardiello pitched versus Branford.
