Wirtz Vaults for Branford at New Balance Nationals; Karosas Competes in CIAC Heptathlon

Bridget Wirtz capped off her exceptional junior season with the Branford girls’ outdoor track squad by competing in the pole vault at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina on June 16. Wirtz reached a height of 11 feet-0.25 inches and finished in 19th place at the national meet.

Previously in the postseason, Wirtz took first place in the pole vault at the SCC West Sectional Championship and the SCC Championship, setting meet and school records by reaching 11-9 at the conference meet. She then took sixth place at the State Open with a height of 10-6 and followed that up by placing fifth with an 11-3 at the New England Championship.

Also for Branford last week, Diana Karosas competed on behalf of the Hornets at the CIAC Hepthatlon. Karosas, who was a freshman this year, finished in 37th place by scoring 1,674 points at the heptathlon, which took place at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on June 13 and 14.

Karosas’s best performance at the heptathlon came in the shot put as she launched a throw of 27 feet-10 inches to finish in eighth place. Karosas also took 11th place in the high jump by reaching a height of 4-8.25. Additionally, Karosas finished 45th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 30.67 seconds and was 50th for the 100 hurdles at 20.47 at the event.
