North Haven Football Team’s Spring Brawl to Benefit Student Amelia DePino

The North Haven football team is holding its 13th annual Spring Brawl fundraiser at Vanacore Field at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 16. The Spring Brawl is an intra-squad scrimmage that is organized by the Indians’ players who will be seniors in the upcoming fall season and, each year, the proceeds from the event benefit a person or an organization in the community. The proceeds from this year’s Spring Brawl will support Amelia DePino, a senior at North Haven High School who is battling leukemia.

“I think that the event is awesome, and what was endeared me to it is that it gives our team an opportunity to use their status at football players to benefit somebody in our community, and this year is special, because Amelia is a classmate to all of our players,” Indians’ Head Coach Anthony Sagnella said.

Tickets for the Spring Brawl are $5. There will be also be T-shirts on sale for $15, as well as a 50-50 raffle at the game, which will feature the Indians’ athletes playing a scrimmage against one another under names Team Maroon and Team White. Both teams are coached by North Haven’s outgoing seniors. Last year’s senior captains were Tom Dodge, Jack Steinman, Max Sullivan, and Kyle Melillo. Mark Montano and Korbin Pecora will captain the Indians’ 2017 squad.

The Spring Brawl also features two celebrity coaches that coach each of the respective squads. This year’s celebrity coaches are Doug Rollins and Dave Fantarella, who are both dentists that live in North Haven.

“My hopes are that there will be huge crowd there in show of support of Amelia’s fight against leukemia. It should be an entertaining evening watching the graduating seniors coach next year’s team,” said Sagnella. “With the cheerleaders, the band, the a capella group Men of Note, we have all these volunteer students participating; the Interact Club will run the concession stand. It’s a day of volunteers with everybody giving their time to Amelia.”

To make a donation to DePino and her family, contact Vincent Campagnuolo at 203-707-0364 or make a check payable to the North Haven Athletic Department in care of Anthony Sagnella and send it to North Haven High School, 221 Elm Street, North Haven, CT.

Throughout the past six years, the Spring Brawl has raised approximately $44,000 to support Special Olympics Connecticut, The Benhaven Group for Autism, the late Matthew Jacques, Anthony Longley, and Hunter Pageau, as well as the building of a new playground at Green Acres Elementary School.
