Burns Finishes 26-1 After Making State Open Quarters; Engels and Dyer Score Points for the Knights at Open Track Meet

Westbrook senior Casey Burns won her first three matches in the singles bracket of the State Open Girls’ Tennis Tournament to advance to the quarterfinal slast week. Burns took her first loss of the year in the quarterfinal round to finish with a record of 26-1.

On June 5, Burns defeated Marisa Ann Tomaj of Newtown 6-0, 6-3 in the round-of-16 at the State Open. Then in the quarterfinals, Burns lost to 4th-seeded Alexandra DeNucci of Glastonbury by a 6-1, 6-1 score. Burns had defeated Ellington’s Erin Malley and Lauralton Hall’s Juliana Gonzalez by 8-1 scores in the first two rounds of the tournament.

Previously this year, Burns recorded an undefeated regular season playing the No. 1 singles position for the Knights’ girls’ tennis squad, which won the Shoreline Conference title. After that, Burns won her fourth straight singles title at the Shoreline Conference Tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Emily Beck of Haddam-Killingworth in the final.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Junior Danyelle Engels scored two points for Westbrook with her performance in the discus at the State Open Championship at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on June 5. Engels launched a throw of 115 feet-2 inches to finish seventh in the discus.

Engels also earned 13th place in javelin with 96-6 and was 20th in the shot put by throwing 32-11.75 at the State Open. The previous week, Engels had finished in the top five of all three events at the Class S State Championship. She also won the discus at the Shoreline Conference Championship this spring.

Junior Tirzah Blomquist represented Westbrook at the Open, and her distance of 33-3.25 in the triple jump was good for 20th place. Avery Bauman qualified for the Open in the pole vault, as well.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Junior Vincent Dyer picked up a point in the discus on behalf of the Knights at last week’s State Open Championship. Dyer’s throw of 140 feet-4 inches put him in eighth place at the Open.

Senior Jay Donlan finished 24th in the discus for Westbrook with a distance of 111 feet-10 inches. The Knights’ 4x100-meter relay team of junior Jake Marciniec, senior Maxwell Morris, junior Andrew Naccaratto, and junior Sean Scully also qualified for the State Open meet.
