North Haven Boys’ Lacrosse Loses in Class M Semis; Vanacore and Marriott Post Points at the Open

Boys’ Lacrosse

The North Haven boys’ lacrosse team saw its season come to a close with a 7-4 loss against 11th-seeded Hand in the semifinals of the Class M State Tournament at West Haven High School on June 5. North Haven, which was the No. 2 seed, finished the year with an overall record of 15-4.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Hand scored the only two goals of the second quarter to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Both sides traded two goals apiece in the third quarter, and Hand led 4-2 entering the fourth. The Tigers outscored North Haven 3-2 in the final frame to come away with the 7-4 victory. Korbin Pecora scored three goals, and Bowen Brennen had one goal for the Indians.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Sarah Vanacore and Erica Marriott combined to score 10 points with their respective fourth-place finishes to put the Indians in 19th place at the State Open Championship on June 5.

Vanacore finished fourth in the shot put by launching a throw of 37 feet-5 inches to score five points. The senior had won the shot put for the second straight year at the SCC West Sectional Championship earlier in the postseason. Then on June 10, Vanacore competed at the New England Championship in Norwell, Massachusetts and finished 18th in the shot put behind a throw of 35-11.

Marriott, a sophomore, placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet-3 inches, also scoring five points for the Indians. She had previously won the event at the Sectional, Conference, and State championships. Marriott also placed ninth in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.62 seconds at the Open. She also qualified for the meet in the 200-meter dash. A few days later, Marriott finished fourth in the long jump at the New England Championship by reaching 17-10.25.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Senior Omar Gebril finished 10th in the 400-meter dash for North Haven at the State Open Championship at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.

Gebril, who had recently won the 400 for the second straight year at the Class MM State Championship, posted a time of 51.07 seconds for his 10th-place showing at the Open.

Girls’ Tennis

Sophomore Julia Migliorini finished her season with a record of 26-1 after advancing to the quarterfinals of the singles bracket at the State Open Tournament.

Migliorini, the No. 8 seed, won three matches at the Open to reach the quarterfinal round, where she took a 6-1, 6-1 loss to top-seeded Kateri Martin from Darien. Migliorini defeated Katie Esposito of Hamden and Barlow’s Madeline Massey by 8-0 scores in the first two rounds. After that, she dispatched 9th-seeded Daphne Kreiger of Amity, 6-3, 6-1, in a third round contest on June 5, which was the same day as the quarterfinal. Migliorini made All-State for the second straight season and was also the SCC Player of the Year for the second year in a row.

Meanwhile, North Haven’s No. 2 singles player, senior captain Olivia Hoyt, wrapped up a great year with a mark of 18-8 after competing at the State Open. Hoyt claimed an 8-1 win against St. Joseph’s Gabby Gatto in the first round and then lost 8-3 to Carolyn Szwed from Farmington in the second round.

Golf

North Haven competed at the Division II State Championship at the par-72 Tallwood Golf Course in Hebron on June 5. The Indians totaled a score of 374 and finished in 20th place at the meet.

Matt Mezzano turned in North Haven’s best showing by taking 41st place with a score of 84 that included two birdies for the 18-hole round. Alex Kirtland finished in 66th place with an 89, including one birdie. Gianni Abate was 93rd with a score of 100, Kameron DeMartin shot a 101 to finish in 97th place, and Steven Pugliese had a score of 106 to finish 98th for the Indians. Head Coach Daria Cummings said that her team shot some great scores on the final nine holes, noting that Mezzano and Kirtland totaled their lowest nine-hole scores of the season by shooting a 40 and 41, respectively.
