H-K Baseball Loses in Class M Semis; Meredith Runs Two Events at the Open

Baseball

The Haddam-Killingworth baseball team’s season came to a close with a loss against Lewis in the semifinals of the Class M State Tournament last week. The 9th-seeded Cougars took on No. 4 Lewis Mills at Palmer Field in Middletown on June 7 and dropped a 5-4 decision.

H-K led 4-0 after scoring four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Tyler Popp. Ben Alonzo had two hits and scored a run However, Lewis Mills rallied to score five unanswered runs and come away with the 5-4 victory, capped off with an RBI double in the sixth.

Also, Alonzo, Popp, and Owen Marica made First team All-Shoreline, while Ross Meglin and Kyle Crandall made the Second Team. Popp and Alonzo also made the All-State Team, and Popp earned Academic All-State Tema recognition.

The Cougars finished the year with an overall record of 19-7 after reaching their second straight Class M semifinal and fourth in six years, as well as the Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinals.

Girls’ Tennis

Junior Emily Beck competed on behalf of Haddam-Killingworth in last week’s State Open Singles Tournament.

Beck first defeated Uma Mehta of Simsbury by an 8-5 score in the opening round. After that, she took an 8-0 loss against 16th-seeded Isabella Koziol from Wilton in a first round matchup.

Boys’ Tennis

Giacomo Volpicelli represented the Cougars in the singles bracket of the State Open Tournament at Amity on June 3.

Volpicelli, a freshman, faced Class L singles champion Andrew Forchetti of Notre Dame-West Haven in the first round and took a 6-1, 6-3 defeat.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Cougars had a few athletes participate in the State Open Championship at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on June 5.

Andrew Meredith came in 10th place for the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:37.33, and he was also 15th in the 1,600 by posting a mark of 4:25.97. Additionally, H-K’s 4x800 relay of Dan Schumann, Seth Freeman, Kyle Criscuolo, and Doug Brown finished 20th behind time of 8:26.95.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

H-K saw some of its athletes take part in the State Open Championship at New Britain’s Willow Brook Park last week.

Julianne Kelly finished 11th for the 800-meter run at 2:22.78, while Veronica Chrzanowski was 16th in the triple jump by reaching a distance of 33 feet-9.5 inches. Also, the Cougars’ 4x800 relay of Lexie Bouthillier, Emma Anziano, Hailey Cassidy, and Kelly placed 19th with a time of 10:12.41.

Golf

The Cougars finished in 16th place with a score of 364 at the Division III State Championship at Timberlin Golf Club in Kensington on June 5.

Oliver Artus led H-K with a score of 85 for the 18-hole round. Following Artus in the scoring column were Alex Segaline (86, including a birdie), John Maio (93), Andrew Kuehn (100), and Ethan Campbell (111).
