Babbin Sisters Make State Open Quarterfinals; Track Also Represents at the Open

Girls’ Tennis

One week after reaching the Class M State Tournament final, the Guilford girls’ tennis team was well represented at the State Open Tournament.

The team of sisters Charlotte and Molly Babbin reached the quarterfinals of the doubles bracket to earn All-State honors. They first earned an 8-0 win against the 9th-seeded team of Alyssa Mayer and Caylie Whiteside of Berlin, followed by an 8-3 victory versus Bolton’s Christina McDonnell and LeAnn Snuffer in the second round. For the third round, the Babbin sisters faced the 8th-seeded team of Hannah Anderson and Lila Pocsik and prevailed 6-0, 6-1. Then in the quarterfinals, they dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision against the top-seeded team of Megan Brown and Kristin Butler from Staples.

Also in doubles play, Emily Dietzko and Sam Stofflet beat Sam Dionne and Morgan Vacca of Canton, 8-0, in the first round, after which they dropped an 8-2 contest versus the 7th-seeded team of Susan Alptekin and Elaina Cummiskey (8-2) of Darien in the second round.

In the singles bracket, Claire Dinauer defeated Nellie Drewry of Sacred Heart, 8-1, for the opening round and then dispatched Emma Kassis from Shepaug Valley by an 8-2 final in her first round matchup. After that, Dinauer took an 8-4 loss against No. 9 seed Daphne Kreiger of Amity in the second round. Faren Roth bested Melissa Real of Nonnewaug, 8-0, in the opening round before prevailing 8-2 over Hamden’s Vidhya Maran. She then lost an 8-0 contest to Madeline DeNucci from Glastonbury in the second round.

Golf

The Indians tallied a score of 344 to finish tied for 13th place with Platt at the Division II State Championship at Tallwood Country Club in Hebron on June 5.

Sam Fridell recorded two birdies and shot an 82 to tie with teammate James Marks for Guilford’s best score on the 18-hole round. Joining them in the scoring column were Austin Hitchcock (86, including 1 birdie), Brian Hao (94), and Jordan Krause (98).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Guilford scored seven points to finish tied for 26th place at the State Open Championship, which was held on June 5 at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.

Meredith Bloss came in fifth place in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:59.30 to net four points, while Jacqui Guerra also qualified in the event. Guilford’s 4x800 relay of Chloe Shaw, Elissa Strand, Kelsi Putnam, and Julia Esposito took sixth place at 9:44.75 to score the remaining three points for the Indians.

Elsewhere for Guilford, Guerra finished 11th (5:12.94) for the 1,600 with Bloss also qualifying for the event, while Strand took 14th place (2:33.37) in the 800 with Shaw additionally qualifying for that event.

At the New England Championships on June 10 in Norwell, Massachusetts, Bloss finished seventh in the 3,200 (11:05), while the Indians' 4x800 relay squad was 10th (9:39).

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Jordan Lembo-Frey placed eighth in the 200-meter run with a time of 22.34 seconds to score a point for Guilford at last week’s State Open Championship.

Additionally for the Indians, Finn Davidson finished 11th for the 1,600-meter run (4:24.56); the 4x800 relay of Will Smith, Davidson, Joe Walters, and Corey Gambardella placed 12th (8:09.05); while the 4x400 relay of Lembo-Frey, Sam Sessions, Smith, and Gambardella also qualified for the event.
