Valley’s Baseball and Softball Squads Lose in States; Baldwin Vaults to 2nd at Class M Meet

Baseball

On May 30, the Valley Regional baseball team matched up against Oxford in the first round of the Class M State Tournament. The 28th-seeded Warriors lost a pitcher’s duel by the score of 1-0 against No. 5 seed Oxford and finished their season with an overall record of 10-11.

Matt Robida had the Warriors’ only hit, which was a one-out triple in the seventh inning that broke up a no-bit bid by Oxford’s starting pitcher.

Softball

The Warriors’ softball squad lost its opening contest of the Class M State Tournament by a 4-2 final against Ellington on May 30. Valley Regional posted a record of 13-8 for the year.

No. 20 seed Ellington held a 1-0 lead before adding three more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Valley mounted a charge by plating two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but recorded the final out with the game-tying run on base.

Olivia Kollmer and Julia Jenkins both went 1-for-3 with an RBI for Valley, which was seeded 13th in the tournament.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Junior Travis Baldwin came in second in the pole vault by clearing 12 feet to score seven points for the Warriors at the Class M State Championship on May 30. Baldwin’s points put Valley in 24th place at the meet.

Valley’s 4x100 relay team of senior Alexander Lepore, freshman Andrew Ferguson, sophomore Ryan Santos and sophomore Nick Braga finished ninth with a time of 45.80 seconds. Sophomore Jason O’Brien took 12th in the triple jump at 40 feet-4.5 inches, placed 14th in the 300 hurdles at 43.32, and finished 17th in the long jump with a 19-6.5. Sophomore Nick Braga took 26th place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.65 seconds. Junior Colin Weymouth finished 26th by running a time of 18.36 seconds for the 110 hurdles.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Maleena Frazier finished sixth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.68 seconds, while fellow senior Libby Spitzschuh placed seventh in the 100-meter dash in 13.35 seconds to lead the Warriors at the Class M State Championship. Frazier and Spitzschuh totaled five points as Valley finished in 28th place at the state meet at New Britain’s Willow Brook Park.

Additionally for Valley, junior Addie Byars finished 11th in the 3,200 (12:24.18) and was 12th in the 1,600 (5:41.31). In the javelin, junior Bonnie Caulfield earned 14th place with a throw of 88 feet. Spitzschuh was 14th in the long jump with a distance of 15-2.5, Haley Hammen finished 17th in the 300 hurdles with a time of 52.38, and junior Sydney Seudmeier placed 18th for the long jump at 14-9.

The Warriors’ 4x100 relay team of junior Jillian Ocken, senior Maya Whitcomb, senior Francesca Daniels, and Spitzschuh placed in 27th place by clocking in with a time of 55.22 seconds.

Boys’ Tennis

The Valley Regional boys’ tennis squad sent several athletes to the Class M State Championship, including Jeff Riggio, who won two matches in the singles bracket to advance to the third round.

Riggio, the No. 9 seed, prevailed in his first round match by the score of 6-1, 6-0. In the second round, Riggio won a hard-fought 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 10-7 decision. Then in the third, round, Riggio lost 6-2, 6-2 against 8th-seeded Dylan Kuchar from Nonnewaug. Ben Kilby won his first round matchup, 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 10-7, and later lost 6-1, 6-1 in the second round. Hal Jones took a 6-0, 6-1 loss in the first round for Valley.

In the doubles tournament, the Warriors’ 15th-seeded team of Nate Gagnon and Jack Liggett was victorious in its first round match by a 6-2, 6-1 final, after which the duo lost a 6-2, 6-2 contest in the second round. Freddie Kerr and Jack Lima prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in the first round and lost 6-1, 6-2 for their second round contest. Kevin Baldwin and Matt Martinez dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision in the first round.

Girls’ Tennis

The Warriors took a 4-3 loss against 8th-seeded Coginchaug in the qualifying round of the Class S State Tournament on May 27. Valley, which was the No. 25 seed, finished its season with an overall record of 11-10.
