Morgan Baseball Advances to Class S Semifinals; Daley Wins 3,200, Helps Girls’ 4x8 Set School Record at States

The Morgan baseball team won its first three games in the Class S State Tournament last week to advance to the semifinal round.

In the first round, the 6th-seeded Huskies hosted Stafford and won 10-0 on May 30. The next day, Morgan had a second round home game against 22nd-seeded Griswold and won 2-0 to move on to the quarterfinals. Then on June 3, Morgan faced No. 19 Shepaug at home and prevailed 3-0 behind a one-hit performance on the mound from senior Cooper Thompson. Morgan scored all three of its runs in the third inning. AJ Fritz hit an RBI double for the Huskies.

Morgan will face No. 2 seed Lyman Memorial (21-2) in the Class S semis at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7 at Muzzy Field in Bristol. With a victory, Morgan would face the winner of top-seeded Holy Cross and No. 5 Housatonic for the title on Friday, June 9 or Saturday, June 10.

Boys’ Tennis

Morgan sent several players to the Class S State Championship, including the doubles team of Sam Moran and Matt Newfield, who made a run to the semifinals.

Moran and Newfield received a first round bye and then won a 6-3, 6-3 decision in the second round. In the third round, the duo won by a 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 10-6 score to reach the quarterfinals. Moran and Newfield won their quarterfinal matchup, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, before taking a 6-3, 6-1 defeat in the semis.

Also in the doubles bracket, John Murray and Chris Nuzzo won their first round contest, 6-2, 6-2; prevailed 1-6, 6-1, 10-5 in the second round, and lost 6-4, 6-3 in the third round. Sean Arribas Cockley and Drew Marzano won their first round matchup, 6-3, 7-5, after which they lost in the second round, 6-1, 6-0.

In singles play, Patrick Markovics won 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 in a marathon match to make it to the second round, where he took a 6-3, 7-5 defeat. Garret Johnson lost 6-0, 6-1 in the first round, while Vincent Tino lost 6-1, 6-2 in the first round.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Junior Kate Daley took home the gold in the 3,200-meter run with a personal record time of 11:26.87 to help Morgan finish tied for 17th place with 22 points at the Class M State Championship on May 30. Daley earned All-State honors and a spot at the State Open with her victorious performance.

Morgan’s 4x800 relay team of sophomore Isabella Ranaudo, freshman Maura Kelly, junior Allison Gardner, and Daley placed third with a time of 10.00.53, which marked a personal record for the quartet and also a Morgan school record. The relay team qualified for the State Open, as did senior Alyssa Robinson, who took fifth place in 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.92. Also at the Class M meet, Gardner took eighth place in the 800 with a time of 2:28.82.

The Huskies sent a handful of other athletes to the State Championship, including seniors Jordyn Suraci and Shannon Maher; juniors Courtney Viglione, Kaitlyn Maurais, Mikayla Mancini, Samantha Mena, and MaryKate Staunton; sophomores Alyssa LeMay and Madison Emmi; and freshmen Taylor Wyatt and Annalyse Olcott.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Huskies finished tied for 26th place by scoring five points in the Class S State Championship on June 1.

Bryce Thomas finished sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.5 seconds, while junior Thomas Southwood finished eighth in the 400 at 52.81. The Huskies’ 4x100 relay team of junior Juan Avila, junior Jhan Bermeo, junior Patrick Wilson, and Thomas earned eighth place with a time of 45.91.

Other athletes who represented the Huskies were juniors Patrick Wilson, Henry Southwood, Brett Martin, and Anes Gadun, along with sophomore Justin Mucha and freshman Chase Lofgren.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Huskies faced Valley Regional in the first round of the Class S State Tournament on May 31. Morgan took a 9-7 defeat and finished the year at 8-10.
