Burns Takes Fourth Straight Shoreline Title; Engels Posts Three Top-Five Finishes at States

Girls’ Tennis

Senior Casey Burns won her fourth straight conference title as a member of the Westbrook girls’ tennis team by taking first place in the 1-2 singles bracket at the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week.

Burns, who owns a record of 25-0 on the season, earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Haddam-Killingworth’s Emily Beck in the championship match on May 26. Burns earned All-Shoreline Conference First Team honors, while teammate Sara Farnoli made the Second Team for the Knights.

Then on May 27, Westbrook took a 5-2 loss to Northwest Catholic in the first round of the Class S State Tournament to finish the season with an 18-3 record. Casey Burns prevailed at No. 1 singles for Westbrook, while the team of Alyssa Esposito and Victoria Koplas won at the No. 2 doubles position.

On June 3, Burns competed at the State Open Tournament as the No. 5 seed and posted an 8-1 win over Erin Malley of Ellington in the first round, after which she defeated Juliana Gonzalez from Lauralton Hall, 8-1, in the second round. Farnoli bested New Fairfield’s Amber Perry, 8-2, in a qualifying round match and then took an 8-0 loss to No. 3 seed Alyssa DiMaio of Staples in the first round. In the doubles bracket, Wetsbrook’s team of Olivia Fabrizi and Marilyn Ulanowicz won their first round match by default to advance to the second round, where they lost 8-2 against the 12th-seeded team from Pomperaug.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Westbrook took eight place overall by totaling 25 points at the Class S State Championship at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on June 1.

Junior Danielle Engels had a big meet for the Knights by earning third place in discus with a throw of 111 feet-4 inches, as well as fourth in javelin (96-6) and fifth in the shot put (33-3). Sophomore Avery Bauman took fifth in the pole vault with a height of 8 feet. In the triple jump, junior Tirzah Blomquist claimed third place with a leap of 34 feet-7 inches.

Westbrook sent several other competitors to the championship meet, including senior Tyjah Childs; juniors Erin Metcalfe, Hayden Davis, Halle Baron, Christine Gallagher, and Isabella Siewert; sophomores Katherine Dahl and Kelly Donlan, and freshmen Alexandria Young and Alexandra Koplas.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Knights competed at the Class S State Championship and finished 12th overall by scoring 22 points.

Westbrook’s 4x100-meter relay team of junior Jake Marciniec, senior Maxwell Morris, junior Andrew Naccaratto, and junior Sean Scully recorded a second-place finish with a time of 44.66 seconds. In the discus, senior Jay Donlan earned second place behind a distance of 133 feet-6 inches, while junior Vincent Dyer finished third with a 129-10.

Also competing at the state meet for the Knights were seniors Hayden Richardson and Zach Jacobs; juniors Roger Silva, Elijah Panzera, and Dan Driscoll; as well as sophomore Michael Gingras.

Softball

Westbrook prevailed 14-10 at Old Saybrook in the qualifying round of the Class S State Tournament before losing to East Granby in the first round. The Knights finished their season with an overall record of 10-14.

Against Old Saybrook, the Knights put a run on the board in the first inning, but the Rams plated six runs in the bottom of the first. The Knights responded in the second by scoring six runs to make it 7-6. In the bottom of the fourth, the Rams scored four more runs to take the lead at 10-7. However, the Knights came back with one run in the fifth inning and six more runs in the sixth for the 14-10 victory.

Senior Alexa Mulvihill pitched a complete game and went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored for Westbrook. Fellow senior Biance Ferrucci was 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored, junior Olivia Pohorylo went 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored, while freshman Madison Marshall went 1-for-2 with three RBI, three walks, and a run scored.

On May 30, the Knights lost to East Granby, 9-0, in the first round of the Class S State Tournament. Ferrucci went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Knights.
