Rams’ Softball Makes Playoffs by Winning Regular Season Finale; Boys’ Track Takes 3rd at Shoreline Championship

Softball

The Old Saybrook softball team qualified for both the Shoreline Conference and Class S State tournaments by defeating Plainville 13-1 in its regular season finale on May 23.

The Rams scored twice in the first inning on a single from Chloe Root that was followed by a two-run home run by Carly Michaud. Plainville loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but the Rams got out of the jam to lead 2-0 after the inning. Anna Joseph led off in the second with a single and came home to score after a couple of sacrifice bunts and an RBI single by Tiffany Kiako. The Rams scored three more runs in the third. In the fourth inning, Old Saybrook blew the game open with five runs, including a sequence where Kiako, Root, and Michaud all singled,followed by two-run home run from Maeve Foley. Old Saybrook scored twice again in the sixth inning.

For the Rams, Root went 3-for-5 with three singles, Foley went 3-for-5 with a couple of singles and a home run, Michaud was 2-for-5 with a home run, and Kiako went 2-for-3.

In the Shoreline Conference quarterfinals, the Rams took a 16-1 loss to Old Saybrook to stand at 9-13 entering states.

Baseball

Old Saybrook lost to Old Lyme 8-3 in the Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinals on May 23.

Next up for the Rams is the Class S State Tournament.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Old Saybrook took part in the Shoreline Conference Championship at Morgan High School on May 24. The team’s overall score of 93 points put the Rams in third place.

Old Saybrook earned a number of victories at the meet, including the 4x800-meter relay team of senior Josh Change, sophomore Shane Henderson, junior Xavier Rios, and junior Eric Sultini, who took first place with a time of 8:13.17. Sultini claimed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.40 seconds, just beating out runner-up Luke Hollingsworth (52.72) of Creed. In the 800, Henderson took home first with a time of 2:00.58 to edge out a win against second-place John Corey (2:01.05) of Lyme-Old Lyme. Senior Austin Reynolds grabbed the gold in the triple jump with a distance of 41 feet-3.5 inches, beating out Jason O’Brien (40-4.5) of Valley Regional. Everyone who took first place made the All-Shoreline Conference First Team.

Other athletes also provided points for the Rams, including the relay quartet of Jalen Johnson, Carlos Chacon, Reynolds, and Devon Moshier for both the 4x100 (3rd, 45.60) and the 4x400 (5th, 3:42.46). Athletes also saw success in individual events, such as Johnson (5th, 53.63) in the 400, Cooper Lucciani (6th, 2:07) in the 800, James Vukovinsky (5th, 17.86) in the 110 high hurdles, Henderson (3rd, 4:32.47) and Dan Baldi (4th, 4:33.31) in the 1,600; Eric Sultini (5th, 24.09) and Johnson (7th, 24.17) in the 200, Baldi (4th, 10:07.66) and Shon Ryan (7th, 10:54.53) in the 3,200; and Anthony Jones (3rd, 37-11), and Rios (7th, 37-6) in the triple jump.

Golf

Old Saybrook competed in the Shoreline Championship Tournament at Stanley Golf Course in New Britain on May 23 and posted a collective score of 353 at the meet. In the end, Old Saybrook finished seventh in the conference standings with 12 points based on record and performance at the Shoreline meet.

Kyle Savino had the lowest score for the Rams with 83. Old Saybrook’s next-best score was Jason Rothman with an 88. Jay DePalermo turned in a scorecard of 89, while Jack Walsh shot a 93.
