Marriott and Gebril Prevail for North Haven at SCCs; Migliorini Earns Second Straight Conference Player of the Year Honor

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Erica Marriott recorded her second postseason long jump victory in as many weeks by winning the event at the SCC Championship, while helping the North Haven girls’ outdoor track team finish in fifth place at the meet. The Indians scored 44.5 points at the SCC Championship, which took place at Lyman Hall on May 23.

Marriott, a sophomore, hit a distance of 16 feet-7 inches to defeat runner-up Olivia Steiner of Law (15-9.6) and capture the SCC long jump crown. She also scored points in her two sprinting events. Marriott ran a time of 12.91 seconds to place third in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash and then came back in the finals with a 12.61, which was good for third. In the 200-meter dash, Marriott sprinted to a time of 26.19 and finished in fourth place.

Sophomore Camille Sahirul continued her great year in the jumps with a couple of point-scoring performances. Sahirul placed third in the long jump at 15-9 and was sixth for the triple jump with a 34-1. Senior Sarah Vanacore took third place in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, which was well farther than her victorious toss of 36-7 at the previous week’s SCC West Sectional Championship. Senior Elise Symon scored points in the 1,600-meter run by finishing fifth at 5:25.92, while sophomore Julie Mappa contributed with a fifth-place showing in the high jump as she cleared 4-8. Junior Jacqui Weaver added to the Indians’ tally by clearing 8-6 in the pole vault to take eighth place.

North Haven also saw two relays finish in ninth place. The 4x100 of freshman Sammy Curcio, sophomore Sarina Sandwell, Sahirul, and junior Ashley Brown posted a time of 52.69, while the 4x800 of Symon, junior Macey DiCarlo, sophomore Clare Connell, and senior Maily Tran timed in at 10:53.61.

Additionally for the Indians, junior Kyla Delvecchio placed 11th in the javelin (91-8), Vanacore finished 13th in the discus (90-5), and Symon came in 14th place for the 800-meter run with a 2:31.26. Sammy Curcio was 10th for the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash at 13.37 seconds, and she also finished 18th in the 200-meter dash at 27.59. Brown took 14th for the 400 (1:02.92) and was 21st in the 200 (27.67). In the preliminaries of the 100 hurdles, Adra Chbihi finished 18th (18.82), and fellow senior Nina Maratea placed 19th (18.84). Freshman Samantha Helwig finished 22nd (69-3) in the javelin, while senior Kayla Rodriguez was 23rd (62-2). Rodriguez also finished 23rd in the shot put with a throw of 27-3.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Senior Omar Gebril raced his way to victory in the 800-meter run for the Indians at last week’s SCC Championship meet. Gebril ran a time of 1:59.99 to edge out Hamden’s Shawn Odei-Ntiri (2:00.25) for the title. Gebril had won the 800 at the previous week’s SCC West Sectional Championship with a 2:01.84. As a team, the Indians scored 22 points and finished in 13th place at the Conference Championship.

Gebril also posted points for North Haven with his sixth-place performance in the triple jump and a distance of 40 feet-9.5 inches. He finished 11th in the long jump at 19-8. Eric Milliard and fellow junior Joe DePrimo contributed to the Indians’ total with their performances in the shot put. Milliard had a top throw of 46-5, while DePrimo reached 42-4 with his best toss. Seniors Carson Tebbetts (114-1) and Michael Tran (113-4) added to North Haven’s score by taking seventh and eighth place, respectively, in the discus.

Senior Josh Bryson finished 10th for the preliminaries of the 110 hurdles at 16.99 seconds and also took 10th in the 300 intermediate hurdles behind a time of 43.63. Robert Farley finished 10th in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet and was 21st in the 100 hurdles prelims at 19.69.

In the triple jump, sophomore Christopher Moran finished 11th (38-7.5), while freshman Ethan Okwuosa placed 15th (37-6). Okwuosa also took 17th place in the long jump with a distance of 18-7.5. Freshman Kyle Maruca finished 12th (104-11) in the discus, and Milliard came in 18th place (96-7). Tebbetts threw 40-8.75 to 12th place in the shot put, and senior Chris DeBridgita finished 20th in the javelin at 110-7.

North Haven’s 4x800 relay of senior Jordan Tong, junior Cory Reilly, senior Jonathan Goodrich, and sophomore Jack Opramolla ran a time of 8:51.10 to finish in 13th place.

Girls’ Tennis

North Haven netted a 4-3 victory versus Lauralton Hall in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals before taking a 5-2 defeat to Hand in the semis. The Indians own a record of 18-4 heading into the Class M State Tournament.

North Haven, which entered SCCs as the No. 4 seed, swept the singles matches to earn its 4-3 home win over No. 5 Lauralton Hall in the conference quarterfinals on May 23. Julia Migliorini not only earned a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the No. 1 singles match, she was also named the SCC Girls’ Tennis Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Meanwhile, Olivia Hoyt’s 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win in the No. 2 singles duel proved pivotal for the Indians in their victory. Hillary Hoyt won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, while Rachel Petry was a 7-6, 6-4 victor in the No. 4 match.

The following day, North Haven faced No. 1 seed Hand at Yale University and lost 5-2. Migliorini prevailed 6-1, 6-2, while Hillary Hoyt recorded a 7-6, 6-4 victory.

Next up, Head Coach Bob Migliorini’s squad will compete in the Class M State Tournament that is being held from Saturday, May 27 through Thursday, June 1. After that, Migliorini and Olivia Hoyt will both compete in the singles bracket of the State Open Championship, which takes place from Saturday, June 3 to Wednesday, June 7.

Boys’ Tennis

On the heels of a 10-7 regular season, North Haven will compete in the Class L State Championship. The meet takes place from Saturday, May 27 through Thursday, June 1.

Softball

North Haven completed its regular season at 17-3 following a 6-3 home win over Branford on May 23, after which the Indians defeated West Haven 7-5 in an SCC Tournament quarterfinal the following day.

The Indians, who are the No. 2 seed in the SCC bracket, will host No. 3 Guilford in a semifinal game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 27. If North Haven wins, it will play the winner of Cheshire and Amity in the championship game on the same day at 6 p.m. at Biondi Field at West Haven High School

Facing West Haven in the SCC quarterfinals, the Indians scored three runs in the third inning before the Blue Devils tied the game on a three-run homer in the fourth. West Haven scored twice in the fifth to go up 5-3, but North Haven used a two-out, nobody-on rally to knot it up again. Peyton Davis doubled and scored on a single by Olivia Peterson, who later raced home on a double from Gigi Russo for a 5-5 ballgame. The Indians then scored twice in the sixth to go up 7-5. Caroline Gabrielle singled to lead off, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Card, and scored the go-ahead run on Laurissa Amaker’s single. Later in the frame, Haylee Garthwait singled in Amaker with an insurance run. Davis went 2-for-4, Russo was 2-for-3, and Arianna DelVecchio added a double for the Indians, who saw Card pitch a complete game for her 15th victory.

Previously, in its regular season finale, North Haven defeated Branford 6-3. Card threw the first two innings, Eryn Sheeley pitched the next four to get her third win, and Card came back to toss a scoreless seventh for the save. Russo was 2-for-2 with a double, Delia Hawkes went 1-for-3 and scored two runs, while Card and Sheeley both hit doubles for Head Coach Sally Maher’s squad.

After SCCs, North Haven has the Class L State Tournament, which takes place from Saturday, May 27 through Saturday, June 10.

Baseball

The Indians dropped a 7-6 decision at East Haven in the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament on May 23. North Haven enters the Class L State Tournament with an overall record of 14-7.

After the two teams shared the Quinnipiac Division title during the regular season, North Haven entered SCCs as the No. 5, while East Haven was the No. 4 seed as a result of a tiebreaker. The Indians plated a run in the top of the first inning, but the Yellowjackets tied it in the second, scored four runs in the third, and added another in fourth for a 6-1 advantage. Undaunted, North Haven came back with three runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to make it a 6-6 ballgame. However, Nick Kraszewski won it for East Haven by hitting a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh.

Luca Lawrence pitched the first 3.2 innings for the Indians, and Brendan Clark worked the final 2.1 innings. Clark had a big day at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Steven Erbe was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run scored, and two RBI. Peyton Farina doubled, walked, and scored a pair of runs for Head Coach Bob DeMayo’s squad. Additionally, Dom Onofrio had a single with a walk and a stolen base, Matt Solomon drew a walk and scored a run, Chris Stevens singled, walked, and drove in a run; and Vinnie Anastasio had a single with an RBI.

Next up for North Haven is the Class L State Tournament, which begins on Saturday, May 27 and goes until the title bout on Saturday, June 10.

Boys’ Lacrosse

North Haven took a 10-9 loss against Cheshire in the semifinals of the SCC Tournament at Vanacore Field on May 23. The Indians moved to 13-3 overall with the defeat.

North Haven entered the SCC Tournament as the No. 2 seed, while Cheshire was the No. 3 seed. It was a back-and-forth game that saw Cheshire take a 4-3 lead after the first quarter and hold a 6-4 advantage at halftime. North Haven outscored the Rams 2-1 in the third to make it 7-6 entering the final frame, but Cheshire wound up coming away with the one-goal victory.

Korbin Pecora scored five goals to lead the Indians, while Jack Broggi netted a pair of goals. Bowen Brennan had a goal with two assists, PJ Saracino scored a goal to go with an assist, and Tom Dodge added an assist for Head Coach Eric Bailey’s squad. Indians’ goalkeeper Dustin Byrnes made 13 saves in the game,

North Haven will be competing in the Class M State Tournament, which takes place from Saturday, May 27 through Saturday, June 10.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Indians bring a record of 9-6 into the Class M State Tournament. The state tourney begins on Saturday, May 27 and culminates with the final on Saturday, June 10.

Golf

The Indians closed the regular season with a record of 6-9-1 after getting a win, taking a loss, and notching a tie in last week’s action.

North Haven recorded a 171-243 victory versus Cross at Alling Memorial Golf Course on May 22.

The following afternoon, the Indians hosted Branford at Wallingford County Club and took a 168-190 defeat. Gianni Abate shot a 46 for North Haven, Kam DeMartin had a score of 47, Steve Pugliese shot a 48, and Matt Mezzano posted a score of 49 for Head Coach Daria Cummings’s squad.

The very next day, North Haven faced Foran at Grassy Hill Country Club and golfed to a 192-192 tie against the Lions. Steve Pugliese earned medalist honors for the Indians by shooting a 44. Pugliese was followed in the scoring column by Mezzano (47), Abate (48), and DeMartin (53).

Sophomore Julia Migliorini was recently named the SCC Girls’ Tennis Player of the Year, marking the second straight year that she’s won that award.
