Kraszewski’s Homer Beats North Haven Before Easties Lose in SCC Semis; Softball Eliminated in Quarters

Baseball

The East Haven baseball team beat North Haven 7-6 on a walk-off homer from Nick Kraszewski in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals before taking an 11-0 loss to Amity in the semifinal round. The Yellowjackets will next be competing in the Class L State Tournament.

In the SCC quarterfinals, 4th-seeded East Haven topped No. 5 North Haven 7-6 in walk-off fashion as Kraszewski’s dinger left the Indians on the field in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kraszewski finished with three hits and picked up the win on the mound after coming in for starter Nick Guarino in the sixth inning. East Haven built an early lead by grabbing a 6-1 advantage through four innings. North Haven tied the game behind three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth, but Kraszewski’s bomb sent East Haven into the semifinals. Tyler Leone added two RBI for the Easties in the victory.

The next day, top-seeded Amity defeated East Haven 11-0 at West Haven High School. Amity jumped on East Haven by scoring six runs in the first inning and led 11-0 through four. East Haven was held to four hits, including a double by Kraszewski.

Next up, East Haven (13-9) will be competing in the Class L State Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, May 30.

Softball

The 6th-ranked Yellowjackets’ softball squad visited No. 3 Guilford in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals on May 24 and lost 3-2 as the Indians scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The two teams were scoreless through four innings as East Haven’s Taylor Myers and Guilford’s Amanda King were both dealing on the mound. The Easties struck first in the fourth when Jessica Stettinger clocked a two-run homer. In the bottom of the sixth, Guilford scored two runs to tie the game at 2-2. The Indians’ Jordyn Goldstein later hit a two-out RBI single to right field for give her team the walk-off victory in the seventh.

With an overall record of 13-8, the Yellowjackets will competing in the Class L State Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, May 30.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

East Haven finished in 17th place by scoring 14 points at the SCC Championship.

Senior Niam Coward earned 10 of those points in the throwing events for the Easties. Coward’s best finish came in the shot put as he took third place with a toss of 47 feet-10 inches to score six points. He also earned four points in the discus with a throw of 116 feet-9 inches to place fifth. East Haven’s other two points were scored by Jordan Ingram and Reinaldo Martinez. Ingram placed seventh in the 200-meter dash at 23.02 seconds to score a pair of points, while Martinez finished in seventh in the final heat of the 110-meter high hurdles at 16.65 to earn two points. In the preliminary heat, Martinez timed in at 16.85 and placed eighth.

Other Yellowjackets who competed at the conference championship included Ingram in the 100 (11th, 11.54), Ian Loehmann in the 110 hurdles (20th, 19.30), Martinez in the 300 hurdles (21st, 47.52), Dominic Manna in the javelin (19th, 113-5), Josh Rao in the javelin (23rd, 77-5), and the 4x100 relay of Mike Castellano, Ingram, Manna, and McClay Marshall (9th, 45.49).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Yellowjackets scored nine points for an 18th-place finish at last week’s SCC Championship, which was held at Lyman Hall High SChool on May 23.

Haley Montesanto had the best finish for the Easties as she placed fourth with a mark of 49.58 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles to earn five points. The other individual point scorer for East Haven was freshman Isabella Ragaini, who finished seventh in the javelin to earn two points with a throw of 96 feet-6 inches. The other points came from East Haven’s 4x400 relay team of Katie Maffeo, Paige Maffeo, Ragaini, and Montesanto, which finished in seventh at 4:19.02 to score two points.

Other competitors at the meet for the Yellowjackets included Paige Maffeo in the 100 (20th, 13.79), Ragaini in the 300 hurdles (21st, 56.46), Molly Mazzucco in the high jump (9th, 4-8); Sydney Marquardt in the pole vault (13th, 7-6) and long jump (11th, 14-8.5), and Summer Onorato in the javelin (17th, 79-0).

Golf

East Haven finished the year with a record of 5-14 after dropping a pair of decisions last week.

On May 23, the Yellowjackets took a 161-203 defeat to Sheehan at the Farms Country Club. The following day, East Haven lost to Amity 162-221 at The Tradition at Oak Lane Country Club.
