Hand’s Tennis Teams, Girls’ Lacrosse Make SCC Final; Girls’ Lacrosse Runner-Up at Conference Meet

Boys’ Tennis

The Hand boys’ tennis continued its perfect season and earned another bid to the SCC Tournament final last week.

The top-seeded Tigers swept No. 8 Branford 7-0 in a SCC Tournament quarterfinal matchup on May 23. Hand next faced No. 4 Guilford in the semifinals at Yale University and swept the Indians 7-0.

The Tigers, who improved to 19-0, will be competing against No. 2 Fairfield Prep in the SCC final at Yale at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 25.

Following SCCs, Hand has the Class L State Championship, which begins on Saturday, May 27.

Girls’ Tennis

The Tigers secured its latest trip to the SCC Tournament final after notching two recent victories to remain undefeated on the season.

Top-seeded Hand opened the SCC Tournament with a 7-0 quarterfinal victory over No. 8 Law on May 22. The next day in the semis versus No. 4 North Haven, the Tigers punched their ticket to the final with a 5-2 decision.

The Tigers, who are now 17-0, will face No. 2 Amity in the SCC Tournament final at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 25 at Yale University.

After SCCs, the Tigers have the Class M State Tournament, which opens on Saturday, May 27.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Tigers earned their fifth consecutive trip to the SCC Tournament final following a lopsided victory versus Lauralton Hall in the semis.

No. 2-seeded Hand defeated No. 3 Lauralton Hall 22-9 in a SCC Tournament semifinal on May 23. The Tigers (13-4) will face No. 1 seed Cheshire in the championship game at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 25 at West Haven High School.

Following that, Hand has the Class M State Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, May 30.

Boys’ Lacrosse

With a record of 10-7, Hand focuses its attention on the Class M State Tournament. The tournament opens with first round play on Wednesday, May 31.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Hand finished second by posting 65 points at the SCC Championship on May 23 at Lyman Hall.

Hand’s Caroline O’Neil won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.16 seconds over runner-up Kathryn Kelly of Lauralton Hall (12.26). O’Neil then took the 400 crown by running a 55.72 to defeat Hamden’s Aisha Gay (56.17).

Also, O’Neil ran a 25.13 and was second in the 200 to Gay (24.92), Gabby Egidio was third (2:21.54) for the 800 and Megan Phillips followed in fourth (2:22.23), Harmon placed fourth for the 400 (1:00.66), Erin Naclerio took fourth in the pole vault (9-6), Gabby Harmon was fifth in the 200 (26.63), and Emily Baker finished seventh in the 1,600 (5:29.77).

The Tigers’ 4x400 relay of Megan Phillips, Abby Walton, Heather Whelahan, and Harmon was runner-up (4:07.15) to Sacred Heart Academy (4:06.49), while the 4x800 of Emily Connelly, Ashlinn Virgulto, Roisin Beirne, and Egidio came in seventh (10:39.80).

Softball

The Tigers competed in the SCC Tournament against Amity last week. Fifth-seeded Hand traveled to No. 4 Amity for a SCC Tournament quarterfinal on May 24 and took an 11-5 defeat.

The Tigers scored early in the first on a solo home run by Lily Geshwind. Amity scored three runs in the bottom of the first. A single and a walk put two runners on base for the Spartans, and then a deep hit over the fence by their cleanup batter brought them all home to make it 3-1. After a quiet second inning for both teams, the Tigers kicked off the third with a single by Hannah Martin. She moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Gina Ciotti. Hollis Wivell then hit a liner to left-center field to score Hannah Martin. Wivell advanced to second on a stolen base and was hit home on a Sophie Schreck single, tying the game at 3-3. Sophie Schreck scored on a throwing error by Amity and the Tigers finished the inning leading 4-3. Hand held Amity scoreless with only two hits given up in innings two, three, and four, however, the fifth inning proved to be the game changer when Amity scored five runs on three hits. A final Tigers’ run was scored in the sixth when Caroline Schreck reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced on a fly out to deep center field by Kaitlyn Martin, and crossed the plate on a single by Christina Coric. Amity tacked on three more runs with three hits in the sixth. Taylor Leckey had a double in the top of the seventh, but was stranded on base. Abby Geshwind pitched all six innings for the Tigers, recording a strikeout, two walks, and allowing 10 hits.

Hand (15-6) next readies itself for the Class L State Tournament, beginning on Tuesday, May 30.

Baseball

The Tigers earned a bid to the SCC Tournament and took a first round defeat to Branford last week.

No. 6 seed Hand took on No. 3 Branford in a SCC Tournament quarterfinal on May 23 and lost 12-1.

The Tigers (13-8) next begin the Class L State Tournament, as play commences on Tuesday, May 30.

Boys’ Volleyball

The Tigers concluded their season on a winning note last week.

Hand took on Norwich Free Academy on May 23 and pulled off a 3-2 victory to finish the year at 4-14 overall.

Girls’ Golf

Hand competed in one match last week and grabbed a victory to move to 7-6 on the year.

The Tigers bested Avon by a 196-215 final on May 24. Gabby Martin medaled with a round of 38, and she was joined on the links by Emma Boey (51), Erickson Richard (53), Angie Balzano (54), and Josie Anderson (55).

The Tigers’ next match is the SCC Championship, which will be on Tuesday, May 30 at Racebrook Country Club.

Boys’ Golf

Hand went 2-2 in a pair of tri-matches last week as it nears the end of the regular season.

The Tigers first took on Notre Dame-West Haven and Shelton on May 23. Hand shot a 185 and lost to both Notre Dame (170) and the Gaels (182).

Hand then moved to 5-12 with a tri-match sweep of Branford (166) and Guilford (170) by shooting a collective total of 158 on May 24.

Next for Hand is the SCC Championship on Tuesday, May 30 at Racebrook Country Club in Orange.
