H-K Boys’ Lacrosse Heading to First Shoreline Final; Softball Defeats Valley in Conference Quarters

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Cougars’ boys’ lacrosse squad defeated Morgan to advance to its first Shoreline Conference Tournament final last week.

Haddam-Killingworth battled Morgan in a Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinal on May 23 and emerged with a 12-9 victory. Also on the day, H-K’s Sam Purdy, Dan Civiello, Finn Miller, Eli Griswold, and Markus Trahan were named to the All-Shoreline Conference First Team, while Nick Burger and Jared Gibbons were named to the Second Team. Griswold was also selected as the Shoreline Conference Player of the Year.

The Cougars, who are now 14-3 overall, will next face Valley Regional in the conference final on Thursday, May 25 at Indian River Complex in Clinton at 7 p.m. The clubs split their two previous meetings this season, with the Warriors winning 12-7 and H-K taking the rematch 6-5.

“I am obviously really proud of these boys. They have worked very hard to get here and hopefully will continue to work hard and accomplish the goals that they have set for themselves for this year,” said Head Coach Mark Richard. “We are very excited to be in this game. We have had a great positive rivalry with Valley for the past couple of years and, if history is any indication, it should be a great game.”

After the conference tourney, the Cougars will next focus their attention on the Class S State Tournament, which opens with first round play on Wednesday, May 31.

Girls’ Lacrosse

H-K earned a berth to the Shoreline Conference Tournament, where the Cougars took an opening round defeat against Old Lyme.

The Cougars traveled to Old Lyme for a Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinal on May 23 and lost 13-8.

H-K (8-9) now plays a qualifying round contest in the Class S State Tournament on either Friday, May 26 or Saturday, May 27.

Softball

H-K finished up its regular season last week, after which the Cougars opened play in the Shoreline Conference Tournament.

The Cougars completed the regular season at 14-6 after taking a 14-0 loss to Holy Cross on May 21.

H-K earned the No. 3 seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and hosted No. 6 Valley Regional in a quarterfinal on May 24. The Cougars prevailed 13-6 versus the Warriors to move on to the semifinals. Winning Pitcher Brooke LaTouche commanded the circle, and Hannah Theriault threw a solid inning in relief. Rachel Senechal opened the H-K offense in the bottom of the first inning by speeding down the base-path to beat out a perfectly placed bunt for her 100th career hit. The Cougars would go on to score four runs in the inning. Valley Regional picked away at the H-K lead in the third by tallying a trio of runs on two hits and a walk. The Warriors knotted the score at 4 in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars’ bats erupted with an eight-run rally. Senechal blasted an RBI double deep to left field, Riley Mrozcka doubled, and Amanda Minervino tripled to lead the attack. Valley Regional put two runs on the board in the sixth, but H-K’s lead was too big to overcome.

The Cougars (15-6) move on to play North Branford in the semifinals on Friday, May 26. The final will be played at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 27 at Old Lyme.

Following that, the Cougars will compete in the Class M State Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, May 30.

Baseball

The Cougars concluded their regular season last week before competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament.

H-K dropped its regular season finale, 6-4, to Ellington on May 21 to finish at 15-5. Ben Alonzo had two hits for the Cougars.

In the Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinals against No. 6 Coginchaug on May 23, the 3rd-seeded Cougars prevailed 2-0. Owen Marica pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out six to get the win. Jon Civiello had two hits and scored a run for H-K.

The next day in the semifinals against No. 2 Old Lyme, the Cougars took a 2-0 defeat.

H-K (16-6) begins the Class M State Tournament on Tuesday, May 30.

Golf

The Cougars wrapped up their regular season before competing in the Shoreline Conference Championship last week.

H-K closed the regular season with a record of 9-7 following a 176-183 win over Hale-Ray on May 22.

Then the Shoreline Conference Championship at Stanley Golf Course in New Britain, the Cougars recorded a score of 362 to finish in ninth place. Alex Segaline led H-K by shooting an 82 on the 18-hole course. Oliver Artus scored an 86, Johnny Maio had a 95, and Tom Fulner shot a 99 for the Cougars. It was also announced that Segaline earned All-Shoreline Conference First Team honors on the season.

Girls’ Tennis

H-K concluded its spring with a clash against Shoreline Conference opponent Old Lyme this past week. The Cougars took a 5-2 defeat against Old Lyme on May 23 and finished 7-13 for the campaign.

Boys’ Tennis

The Cougars finished off their spring season with a contest against Old Lyme last week. H-K closed its 2017 campaign at 2-16-2 overall following a 5-1 loss to Old Lyme on May 23.
