Connecticut Takes First at Senior Gymnastics Showcase


Gymnasts from around the state represented Connecticut at the National High School Gymnastics Association Senior Showcase. The Connecticut High School Coaches Association Gymnastics Committee selected several gymnasts from the state, including Daniel Hand student Lily Spencer, to represent Connecticut at the National High School Gymnastics Association Senior Showcase. This championship meet featured outstanding senior gymnasts from around the country and was held at the Estero Community Center in Estero, Florida on May 19 and 20. The Connecticut team placed first with 149.025 points. Illinois was second with 147.4, Massachusetts was third with 147.3, and New Jersey was fourth with 146.9. Hand gymnastics Head Coach Kelly Smith was one of the Connecticut coaches who helped prepare the team for the meet.

The seniors who competed at the Senior Showcase were Maranda Ealahan (East Lyme High School), Samantha Aparicio (Darien), Elisabeth Heikkinen (Waterford), Taylor Churchill (Norwich Free Academy), Madison Clark (Sacred Heart Academy), Megan Muller (Pomperaug), Spencer (Hand), Melanie Coleman (Law), Fallon Berry (Shelton), Sofia Eschmann (Nonnewaug), Paige Stuyniski (Woodstock Academy), and Grace Logan (Woodstock Academy).

The Connecticut coaches who helped prepare the gymnasts were Bethany Mihaly (New Milford), Smith (Hand), Pat Simon (Law), Kim Detuzzi (East Lyme-Waterford), Hal Rettstadt (Pomperaug), Robin Deary Fillmore (Woodstock Academy), Kim Longobucco (Shelton), Kasey Fillmore (Woodstock Academy), Mark Sorrentino (Sacred Heart Academy-Nonnewaug), and Kasey Fillmore (Woodstock Academy).
