The Valley Regional boys’ tennis team played five matches last week and won three of them to close out its regular season with a record of 13-7.
On May 15, the Warriors went to Coginchaug and won 7-0. In singles, Jeff Riggio won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 position; Ben Kilby won 7-6, 6-1 at No. 2; Hal Jones earned 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3; Kevin Baldwin prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4; and Nate Gagnon won 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot. In doubles, Jack Liggett and Buddy Haydu won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1; and Matt Martinez and Jake Decker claimed the 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2.
The next day, Valley netted a 6-1 victory at Coginchaug. Riggio won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles; Kilby won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2; Baldwin won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4; and Freddie Kerr earned 6-4, 2-6, 7-3 victory in the No. 5 match. Gagnon and Jack Lima won 7-6, 7-6 at No. 1 doubles while Decker and Martinez won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2.
On May 17, the Warriors hosted Westbrook and lost 6-1. Riggio won 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for the Warriors
On May 19, Valley won a 7-0 home decision over East Hampton. In singles play, Riggio won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1; Kilby won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2; Jones won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3; Baldwin was a 6-0, 6-1 victor at No. 4; and Martinez earned the 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5. In doubles, Liggett and Gagnon won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot; and Valley won by forfeit at No. 2.
The next day, the Warriors hosted Old Saybrook were edged 4-3. Jones won 7-5, 7-4 at No. 3 singles; while Kerr won 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 5. Haydu and Baldwin won a 6-1, 6-2 decision for the No. 2 duel.
Girls’ Tennis
The Warriors split their four matches last week to go 11-9 for the regular season and earn a spot in the Class S State Tournament.
On May 15, Valley lost 4-3 against Coginchaug at home.
On May 17, the Warriors were at Westbrook and took a 6-1 loss. Izzy Bowden won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles for the Warriors. The next day, Valley was back home and won a 5-2 contest against Cromwell to qualify for states. Then on May 19, the Warriors had a match at East Hampton, where they won 7-0.
Crew
The Valley crew participated in two regattas last week.
On May 10, the Warriors competed at Rogers Lake in Old Lyme. The first boat earned third in its race with a time of 5:57.7, and second shell took third with a time of 6:21.7. The third shell claimed first place with a time of 6:29.3, and the fourth boat took third at 6:37.6. The novice eight placed second behind a time of 6:45.3.
On May 13, Valley was at the Gilder Boathouse at the Hopkins School in New Haven. The first boat for Valley took second place in its race with a time of 6:24.12. The Warriors’ second boat grabbed second place with a mark of 6:21.55. The third shell finished second with a time of 6:57.76. The Warriors’ fourth boat won first place by recording a time of 6:55.72.
Baseball
Valley went 1-1 for the final week of the regular season to finish with a record of 10-10.
The Warriors took an 8-0 loss at Law and then scored a convincing 19-1 victory over Goodwin Tech on Senior Night. Now, Valley gets ready to compete in states.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Warriors dropped a pair of recent contests to post a record of 12-4 in regular season play.
On May 17, Valley took a 6-5 loss at Haddam-Killingworth. The next day, the Warriors dropped a 12-7 decision at Ellington. Next up, Valley has the Shoreline Conference Tournament, after which the Warriors will compete in the Class S State Tournament.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Valley took four defeats last week to finish at 5-11 on the season.
On May 15, the Warriors hosted Somers and lost 16-8. On May 17, Haddam-Killingworth came to Valley Regional and defeated the Warriors 19-13. The next day, Valley was home against Old Lyme and lost 22-14. On May 20, the Warriors went to face Fitch on the road and took a 13-12 defeat.
Golf
The Warriors now stand at 3-7 after taking a pair of defeats last week.
On May 15, the Warriors hosted Morgan at Fox Hopyard Country Club and lost 191-198. Jake Patterson shot a 46 for Valley. Alex Fortier and Cory Craco both turned in scores of 50, plus Jack O’Brien shot a 52.
On May 16, Valley was on the road to face Cromwell at TPC River Highlands and dropped a 176-184 contest.
