Old Saybrook’s Boys’ Lacrosse Uses Late Surge to Make States; Girls Improve to 9-7


Boys’ Lacrosse

The Old Saybrook boys’ lacrosse squad won its last three games of the regular season, including two last week, to finish with a 7-9 record and earn a spot in the Class S State Tournament. The Rams’ states bid comes in James Hespeler’s first campaign as head coach after Old Saybrook had gone 0-16 in each of the last two seasons.

On May 16, Old Saybrook was on the road to face Haddam-Killingworth and won 9-6, avenging an earlier 13-6 loss to the Cougars. The Rams built a 6-3 lead by the half and did not trail in the game. Christos Ellinas scored seven goals and assisted on three others for Old Saybrook, while Jack Oliveri had two goals and an assist. Cameron Grillo netted a goal and also had three assists for the Rams.

On May 18, the Rams faced off against Vinal Tech at home and prevailed 19-2 to seal its trip to states. Old Saybrook jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Once again, Ellinas had seven goals and three assists for Old Saybrook. Oliveri scored two goals and had three assists, and Tenzin Rabjam had a pair of goals. Grillo scored a goal and had an assist. Ashton Reina scored a goal and had two assists, as did Jefferson Yanza. In addition, Sloan True, Erik Frysinger, John Guarnaccia, Liam Finnegan, and Charles Carlo each netted a goal in the big victory.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Rams won their only game last week to put their regular season record 9-7 this year. On May 15, Old Saybrook faced Haddam-Killingworth at home and won 16-12. The Rams led the Cougars 9-7 at halftime and then outscored Haddam-Killingworth 7-5 in the latter half.

Old Saybrook has the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week and will then be competing in the Class S State Tournament.

Boys’ Tennis

The Rams won all three of their matches last week to post a record of 18-2 for the regular season.

On May 17, Old Saybrook was at Cromwell and won 6-1. Two days later, the Rams prevailed 7-0 at Portland. The next day, Old Saybrook faced Valley Regional in Deep River and won 4-3.

The Rams will next be competing in the Class S State Championship.

Baseball

Old Saybrook was victorious two of its last three regular season matchups for a record of 10-10.

On May 15, the Rams were at West Rock Park to face Creed-Hillhouse and won 24-3. Old Saybrook led 8-0 after the first and scored in every inning en route to the lopsided victory. Bryan Schuster went 3-for-3 with five RBI and a run, Jack Colella was 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs, and Haydon Lockhart went 3-for-5 with three RBI and four runs scored for the Rams. Philip Ledwith picked up the win by pitching 5.1 innings, and Colella followed in relief by tossing 1.2 innings.

On May 17, Old Saybrook hosted Old Lyme and lost 2-0. Old Lyme scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to get the win. Dan Cote had a double for Old Saybrook.

On May 19, the Rams hosted Creed-Hillhouse and won by a 28-1 final.

Old Saybrook has the Class S State Tournament coming up.

Softball

The Rams took a 10-8 loss to Cromwell last week to move to 7-12 on the season. Old Saybrook needs to prevail at Plainville in its regular season finale to make states. The game takes place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23.

On May 15, the Rams got out to a strong start in their home game against Cromwell by scoring five runs in the first inning. Old Saybrook led 6-3 through five, but the Panthers scored seven times in the sixth inning, and came away with the win. Chloe Root was 3-for-4 with two singles and a triple for Old Saybrook.

Golf

Old Saybrook is now 9-7 after winning one of its three recent matchups.

On May 15, the Rams hosted East Hampton at the par-35 Fenwick Golf Course and won 173-195. Jay DePalermo earned medalist honors by shooting a 38 for Old Saybrook. Dean Nobile hot a 43, while Jason Rothman scored a 45. Jack Walsh and Kyle Savino both shot a 47.

On May 16, Old Saybrook played at Old Lyme’s home course of Black Hall Club and lost a close match, 172-174.

On May 19, the Rams went up against Coginchaug at Lyman Orchards and lost 135-137. Kyle Savino garnered co-medalist honors with a score of 32. Jack Walsh and Jay DePalermo both shot a 34, plus Jason Rothman turned in a scorecard of 37.
