Morgan Boys’ Golf Wins Three During Busy Week; Baseball Defeats Westbrook, 8-6

Golf

The Morgan boys’ golf team had a busy week that featured a trio of victories at the Huskies moved to 8-12 on the year.

On May 15, Morgan went to Fox Hopyard Country Club to face Valley Regional and won 191-198. Jack Bugg took home medalist honors with a score of 40 for the Huskies. Burton Caldwell shot a 42, Ryan Powers turned in a score of 52, and Olivia Powers shot a 57.

The following afternoon, Morgan hosted East Hampton and Fitch at Clinton Country Club. The Huskies won 175-216 against the Bellringers and defeated the Falcons 175-230. Bugg shot a 39 and was the medalist once again. Caldwell shot a 41, Olivia Powers shot a 45, and Ryan Powers scored a 50.

On May 17, the Huskies went to the Portland Golf Course to match up against the host Highlanders and Conard. Morgan shot a 179 and lost to both Portland (158) and Conard (179). Caldwell shot the lowest score for Morgan with a 39. Bugg scored a 41, Ethan Tessman shot a 48, and Olivia Powers had a score of 51.

Two days later, Morgan faced Haddam-Killingworth at the Black Birch Golf Course. Caldwell shared medalist honors with Alex Segaline of H-K as they both shot 39. Bugg scored a 40, Olivia Powers shot a 50, and Scotty Accetta finished with a score of 61 for the Huskies.

Girls’ Golf

The Huskies took a pair of defeats in last week’s action.

On May 17, the Huskies were at the Madison Country Club to face Hand and lost by the score of 188-238. Two days later, the Huskies took a 230-268 loss against Waterford.

Baseball

Morgan lost two of its three games last week and is now 15-5 on the season.

The Huskies hosted East Catholic on May 17 and lost 12-1. The next day, Morgan was at East Lyme dropped a 6-0 contest. On May 20, the Huskies were back home and won an 8-6 game against Westbrook.

Morgan is competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week.

Softball

The Huskies took three recent defeats to move to 7-12 for the year. Morgan needs to win its regular season finale against Valley Regional to qualify for states.

On May 16, the Huskies lost 12-4 at Valley Regional. Cameron LeClaire went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, Rebecca Stomp was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Sydney Chomicz was 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored for Morgan.

The next day, Morgan was on the road against North Branford and lost 8-1. LeClaire, Chomicz, and Shamp each had a hit.

On May 19, the Huskies hosted West Haven and took a 16-1 defeat. Autumn Johns went 2-for-2, while Chomicz and Shamp both had a hit.

Boys’ Tennis

Morgan won one of its three matches last week to finish the regular season with a record of 15-5.

In singles play, Patrick Markovics won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2; Matt Newfield won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3; Vincent Tino won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4; and Garrett Johnson claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 5. In doubles, the teams of Paddy Murray and Chris Nuzzo, plus Sean Cockley and Drew Marzano won by forfeit.

The next day, Morgan hosted Suffield and lost 4-3. In singles play, Sam Moran won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1; Newfield won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3; and Tino prevailed 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4.

On May 19, the Huskies took a 7-0 loss to Westbrook.

Girls’ Tennis

The Huskies dropped two decisions last week to put their record at 4-14 for the year.

On May 16, Morgan lost 6-1 at Coginchaug. Emma Phelps won a 6-1, 6-3 decision at the No. 1 singles position.

On May 19, the Huskies went up against Westbrook and lost 5-2. In singles play, Yashveen Rai won 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 match. Brenna Andrews and Lily Cummings earned a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 1 doubles.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Morgan played one match at home against Somers last week. The Huskies took a 21-8 defeat for a regular season record of 8-8.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Huskies hosted Lewis Mills at the Indian River Complex last week. Morgan lost a 13-10 decision to finish the season at 0-15.
