Both Westbrook Tennis Teams Take the Shoreline Title; Softball Sneaks into States

Boys’ Tennis

The Westbrook boys’ tennis team swept its three matches last week improve to 19-0 on the season and clinch the Shoreline Conference championship. Westbrook will go for an undefeated regular season when it hosts non-conference opponent Granby Memorial at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 22.

On May 15, Westbrook defeated Cromwell 5-2 at home. In singles play, Dave Amendola won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2; Nate Comment won 6-1; 6-1 at No. 3; Dylan Martinson grabbed a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4; and Jason Raunikar prevailed 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 at No. 5. Austin Herzy and Tim Knudsen won 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 1 doubles position.

On May 17, the Knights posted a 6-1 victory at Valley Regional. Amendola won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles; Comment won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3; Martinson claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4; and Raunikar won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5. In doubles, Hartzell and Herzy won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1; and Kevin Dickey and Binak Cecunjanin took a 6-3, 6-0 decision at No. 2.

Two days later, Westbrook defeated Morgan 7-0 to finish its undefeated season against conference opponents. In singles play, Gus Marx won 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1; Amendola won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2; Comment was a 6-1, 6-3 victor at No. 3; Martinson won 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4; and Raunikar won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. Hartzell and Herzy won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles; while Dickey and Cecunjanin won 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.

Girls’ Tennis

Westbrook clinched the Shoreline Conference title by winning two of its three matches last week. This is the third time in four years that the Knights have held the Shoreline title. Casey Burns finished her undefeated regular season with a record of 20-0.

On May 15, the Knights took a 4-3 loss at Cromwell. In singles play, Burns won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1; and Sara Farnoli won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. In doubles, Lexi Vumbeck and Alyssa Esposito earned a 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 3 match.

Two days later, Westbrook hosted Valley Regional and prevailed 6-1 to clinch the conference title. Burns won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles; Farnoli won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2; and Sarah Davey won a 6-4, 6-0 decision at No. 3. Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi won 6-4, 2-6, 7-4 at No. 1 doubles; Savannah Marshall and Victoria Koplas won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2; and Vumbeck and Esposito won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3.

On May 19, the Knights recorded a 5-2 victory at Morgan. In singles play, Burns won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1; Farnoli won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2; and Ulanowicz won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. In doubles, Marshall and Koplas won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1; and Vumbeck and Esposito captured a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot.

Softball

The Westbrook softball team had to win its final two regular season games to qualify for the Class S State Tournament, and the Knights did exactly that to get back to the postseason this year.

On May 15, Westbrook hosted Windsor Locks and won a 3-2 decision. Westbrook led 3-0 going into the seventh inning. The Raiders put two runs on the board, but the Knights hung on for the 3-2 victory. Alexa Mulvihill earned the win for Westbrook with seven strikeouts in a complete game performance. She also went 3-for-3 with a home run, a RBI, and two runs scored. Kylie Magee was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run, while Madison Marshall had a walk and an RBI for the Knights.

On May 19, Westbrook hosted O’Brien Tech with a chance to make states and won big by a 15-1 score. Mulvihill got the win with five innings pitched, striking out nine batters. At the plate, Mulvihill was 3-for-4 with five RBI and three runs scored. Biance Ferrucci went 3-for-4, scored two runs, and drove in one. Isabella Raffone went 2-for-3 with a RBI for the Knights.

Baseball

Westbrook won its last three games of the season to finish with a record of 6-14.

On May 17, the Knights played a game at Dunkin’ Donuts Park against Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy (HMTCA). Westbrook defeated HMTCA by the final score of 8-5.

On May 19, Westbrook won 8-2 at O’Brien Tech. The Knights led 3-2 after three innings before blowing the game open with five runs in the fourth. Sophomore Cameron Marshall got the win on the mound, while also going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Greg Wnek was 2-for-3 with a two RBI and two runs. Connor Cruz went 2-for-5 with a double a RBI and a run.

The next day, the Knights went to Clinton to face Morgan and lost 8-6.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Knights hosted tri-meet against Cromwell and Creed on May 16. Westbrook won both matchups by defeating Cromwell 68-48 and Creed 85-11.

Several athletes earned first-place honors for the Knights. Among them were Andrew Naccarato in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.3 seconds and the 200 with a time of 23.6 seconds. Jay Donlan took first in the discus with a distance of 137 feet-5 inches. Elijah Panzera grabbed first in the javelin at 28 feet-10 inches. In the triple jump, Michael Leary earned first for his distance of 34 feet-11 inches. Maxwell Morris won the high jump by clearing 5 feet-8 inches. Izach Jacobs took first place in the pole vault as he cleared 10 feet. The Knights also took first in the 4x100 relay with a time of 45.7 seconds.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Westbrook hosted Creed with Cromwell for a tri-meet on May 16. Westbrook defeated Cromwell 99-43 and was also victorious against Creed, 117-11.

Earning first-place honors for the Knights were the 4x800 relay team with a time of 12:32.9, the 4x400 team at 4:33.3, and the 4x100 team with a time of 52.7 seconds. Avery Bauman placed first in the 1,600 with 6:03.7, the 3,200 with 13.27.5, and the pole vault by clearing 7 feet-6 inches. In the 100-meter hurdles, Tyjah Childs grabbed first with a time of 17.9 seconds. Erin Metcalfe earned first place in the 300 hurdles with a time of 53.8 seconds, and also won the long jump behind a distance of 15 feet-10.5 inches. Danyelle Engles earned first in the discus with a throw of 108 feet-5 inches and the javelin at 90 feet-10 inches. Alexandra Koplas claimed first in the 800 with a 2:53.2. Kelly Donlan grabbed first in the shot put with a distance of 33 feet-5 inches. Tirzah Bloomquist was first for the triple jump at 33 feet-6.75 inches. In the high jump, Alexandria Young placed first with 4 feet-4 inches.
