H-K Boys’ Track Goes 12-1 for Regular Season; Softball, Baseball Ready for Playoffs

Boys’ and Girls’ Outdoor Track

On May 16, the Haddam-Killingworth outdoor track program traveled to Coginchaug for its regular season finale with a tri-meet against the host Blue Devils and North Branford.

The boys’ team went 2-0 on the afternoon to put its dual-meet record at 12-1 for the season. The boys defeated Coginchaug 79-71 and bested North Branford by a score of 140-10. Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Nick Formica in the 100 (11.2), the long jump (19-9), and the triple jump (38-9); Colin Regan in the 400 (54.9), Conor McCabe in the 800 (2:05.50), Andrew Meredith in the 3,200 (9:47), plus Nate Breiling for the shot put (37-11) and the discus (111-6). The 4,800, 4x400, and 4x100 relay teams were also victorious on the afternoon.

The H-K girls’ team went 1-1 to finish with a dual-meet record of 10-3. The girls defeated North Branford 127-21, but lost a close meet to Coginchaug, 76-74. Pacing the Cougars were event victors in Veronica Chrzanowski for the long jump (16-2) and the triple jump (32-6), Sarah Blanton in the high jump (4-8), Sadie Strom for the 100 hurdles (16.8) and 300 hurdles (48.7), Destiny Pendleton with the shot put (27-4), and Maggie Fisher in the 3,200 (12:58). The 4x800 and 4x100 relay teams also prevailed.

Softball

H-K got a big win on Senior Day last week and now stands at 14-5.

The Cougars recorded a 14-4 victory over Rocky Hill on May 17. Winning pitcher Hannah Theriault allowed no runs on three hits and struck out four. It was Senior Day and the Cougars honored their six seniors in Rachel Senechal, Ari Masotti, Riley Mrozcka, Theriault, Hannah Little, and Ana Hale.

H-K then dropped an 11-1 decision to Northwestern on May 19.

The Cougars will next host a Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinal on Thursday, May 25. A win puts them in the semifinals on Friday, May 26, and then the final will take place on Saturday, May 27 at Old Lyme.

Baseball

The Cougars (15-4) will host Coginchaug on Monday, May 22 in a Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinal contest. The winner moves onto the semifinals on Tuesday, May 23. The final will take place on Friday, May 26 at Indian River Complex in Clinton.

Girls’ Lacrosse

H-K finished the regular season at 8-8 and next awaits the postseason.

H-K took a 16-12 loss to Old Saybrook on May 15. The Cougars bounced back with a 19-13 victory against Valley Regional two days later. In its regular season finale, H-K lost 14-12 against North Branford on May 18.

The Cougars next travel to Old Lyme on Tuesday, May 23 for a Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinal. The winner there advances to the final on Thursday, May 25 at 5 p.m. at Indian River Complex in Clinton.

Golf

The Cougars now sport a record of 8-7 after splitting four matches last week.

H-K took a 168-201 defeat to Old Lyme on May 15 and then lost a 171-193 contest to Coginchaug the next day.

The Cougars got back on the winning side with a 176-189 decision over East Hampton on May 17. Alex Segaline medaled with a 40, and he was followed by Johnny Maio (44), Tom Fulner (45), and Oliver Artus (47).

H-K took a 150-188 loss to Portland on May 18, but then beat Morgan 174-190 on May 19. Against Morgan, Segaline was a co-medalist with a 39, and joining him in the scoring column were Maio (42), Fulner (46), and Artus (47).

Girls’ Tennis

The Cougars moved to 7-12 on the spring after dropping a pair of matchups in Shoreline Conference action last week.

H-K took a 5-2 loss versus Old Lyme on May 17 and a 6-1 defeat to Cromwell on May 19.

Boys’ Tennis

The Cougars are now 2-15-2 on the campaign following a trio of recent clashes on the court.

H-K started the week with a 4-3 loss to Coginchaug on May 16. Giacomo Volpicelli won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for his 14th consecutive Shoreline Conference victory, while Ben McLaughlin prevailed 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Nicholas von Feldt came back to win his singles match by the score of 6-7, 6-1, 6-2.

The Cougars next lost a 7-0 final to Old Lyme the next day, and then a dropped 6-1 decision against Cromwell on May 19.
