North Branford Girls’ Lacrosse on Six-Game Win Streak; Softball Enjoys Four-Win Week

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Thunderbirds’ girls’ lacrosse team pushed its win streak to six straight games by winning three more contests, while improving to 12-2.

On May 8, North Branford edged North Haven 14-13. Sydney Hogan scored four goals with five assists, and Jessie Kilburn also netted four goals. Tara Lauro scored a pair of goals, plus Stephanie Seymour, Emmy Norton, Emilie Wilkinson, and Adriana Ingarra all scored one. Elissa Nuzzo made seven saves in goal.

The next day, North Branford beat Morgan 20-8. Hogan scored four more goals and added five assists, Seymour scored three goals and had two assists, and Norton scored two with four assists. Kilburn and Wilkinson scored three goals each, Ingarra scored twice, and Ali Barrett, MacKenzie Kaiser, and Lauro all scored a goal apiece. Nuzzo recorded nine saves.

To close out the week, North Branford topped Ellington 13-8 on May 12. Hogan scored four goals, Kilburn added three, Norton and Wilkinson scored two each, and Barrett and Seymour each scored once. Norton recorded three assists, with Nuzzo making nine saves.

Softball

North Branford won four games last week to improve to 13-4.

The week started with a 9-2 victory over Coginchaug on May 8. Julia Haeckel earned the win by allowing four hits and striking out seven. Katy Pederson had a three hits also drove in a run, while Brianna Raccio and Olivia Hemstock had two hits and two RBI each. Angelina Ramada also had two hits, plus Haeckel, Emily Muzyka, and Sam DeAngelo each added an RBI.

The following day, North Branford posted a 9-3 victory over Haddam-Killingworth. Pederson collected three hits and drove in a run, plus Danielle Ramada drove home two. Haeckel and Muzyka had two hits each and both drove in a run, as did Kayla Despres. Sydney Senerchia struck out 12 in a complete game effort.

On May 10, North Branford swept a doubleheader from Valley Regional, winning 7-3 and 5-0. In the first game, Senerchia had two hits and drove home three runs, while Emily Muzyka had three hits. Pederson, Angelina Ramada, and Haeckel had an RBI. Haeckel allowed 13 hits, but worked out of jams, and ultimately struck out 10. In the second game, Senerchia struck out 10 batters and allowed just four hits in shutout performance. Muzyka had three hits and three RBI, plus Despres drove in a run.

North Branford closed out the week with a 3-1 loss to Haddam-Killingworth on May 12. Haeckel and Angelina Ramada had two hits each. Haeckel allowed just five hits with nine strikeouts.

Baseball

The T-Birds dropped three contests last week and are now 4-13.

North Branford took a 5-0 defeat at Valley Regional and a 10-1 loss at Haddam-Killingworth. Nick Mancini doubled home North Branford’ run against H-K.

The Thunderbirds ended last week with a 3-2 loss at home to Hale-Ray.

Girls’ Tennis

North Branford won one of its four matches last week to improve to 4-12.

On May 8, Morgan defeated North Branford 4-3. Wins for the T-Birds came at No. 2 singles as Sydney Constantindi won 6-2, 6-1; at No. 3 singles as Zelda Galdenzi won 6-4, 6-0; and at No. 4 singles as Sofia Cavalier won 6-0, 6-0.

On May 10, North Branford earned a 4-3 victory over Coginchaug. Head Coach Matt Tortora called the match a “trust the process” victory as the T-Birds defeated one of the top teams in the Shoreline Conference. The T-Birds swept singles action as Jordan Franco won 6-3, 7-5; Constantinidi won 6-2, 7-5; Galdenzi won 6-2, 7-5 (7-5); and Cavalier won 6-3, 6-1.

After that, Haddam-Killingworth edged North Branford 4-3 on May 11.

Then on May 12 Westbrook beat North Branford by the same score. Galdenzi won 6-1, 6-3 and Cavalier won 6-3, 6-0 in singles matches. The doubles team of Nicole Yeager and Briana Dautaj claimed a 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) victory. The T-Birds’ tandems of Alyssa Diaz and Janessa Pampano, Jordan Caplan and Ashley Testa, and Kayla Bonaldo and Ava Smola also competed for North Branford during the week.

Boys’ Tennis

North Branford took on Morgan on May 8. Chris Candelora came away with a 7-5, 6-4 victory in singles action for the Thunderbirds.

Golf

North Branford picked its first two victories last week to improve to 2-10.

On May 9, the T-Birds were defeated by Portland 156-215 and Valley Regional 194-215. John Lovelace shot a 52, Christian Defrancesco scored a 53, Jake Neubig had a 54, and Zach Smola a 56.

The next day, North Branford shot a 168 to defeat East Haven (172) and Cross (196). Neubig earned medalist honors with a round of 39, while Lovelace shot a 41, Paul Zumbo had a 43, and Defrancesco turned in a 45.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The North Branford boys’ outdoor track team excelled at a few recent competitions.

On May 2, North Branford defeated Hale-Ray and took defeats against Old Saybrook and Valley Regional in a quad-meet. Jacob Marshall swept the 200 with a time of 23.6. He also took second in the 110 hurdles at 11.2 and the javelin with a throw of 118 feet-10 inches. Sydney Franklin scored points in the 100 (11.5), long jump (17-6), triple jump (35-0), and high jump (5-2). Michael Rabuffo posted points in the 200 (24.1), high jump (5-4), and long jump (17-4.5). Other contributors included Michael Madoule in the 400 (57.04) and Alvin Chan in the discus (85-0). The 4x800 relay of Zach Jamieson, Jared Jamieson, Parker Nadeau, and Madoule posted a time of 10:00, while the 4x400 of Austin Gibilisco, Madoule, Tyler Capasso, and Nadeau finished second at 4:02.

On May 6, North Branford competed in the Mary Roberts Invitational at Coginchaug. Marshall received medals by taking fifth in the 100 at 11.55 and fourth in the 200 at 27.73. Madoule also earned a medal with a sixth-place finish in the 400 at 54.11.

On May 9, North Branford beat Portland and lost to East Hampton. Madoule had first-place finish in the 400 at 54.89, while Chan also earned the top spot in the discus at 95-5, as did Jared Jamieson in the javelin with a throw of 112-4. Marshall finished second in the 100 (11.65) and 200 (24.25) and also placed in the javelin at 103-7. Franklin was second in both the long jump (16-11) and triple jump (35-9), while also scoring points in both the 100 (12.15) and high jump (5-2). Also point scorers for the T-Birds included Zach Jamieson in the 800, Parker Nadeau in the long jump, Hunter Boni in the 3,200, Tyler Capasso in the discus, Freddie Little in the 300, and Austin Gibilisco in the 200. The 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams also scored points.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The T-Birds traveled to Coginchaug to compete in the Mary Roberts Invitiational on May 6.

The top finisher for North Branford was Winnie Chan, who took first in the high jump at 4-10. Also receiving medals were Jenna Bryden for taking fifth in the 200 at 27.73, Grace Little for finishing sixth in the 100 at 13.27, and Mackenzie Glenn for taking sixth in the long jump at 15 feet-3.25 inches. The girls’ 4x100 relay team of Sarah Criscuolo, Bryden, Little, and Lydia Mattson earned a medal with a fourth-place finish at 53.47.
