Morgan Boys’ Tennis Wins Out the Week; Boys’ Lacrosse State Tourney Bound

Boys’ Tennis

The Morgan boys’ tennis squad won all three of its matches last week to move to 14-3 this season.

On May 8, the Huskies beat North Branford at home, 6-1. In singles play, Matt Newfield won by default at No. 2, as did Vincent Tino at No. 3; Garrett Johnson at No. 4; and Paddy Murray at No. 5. In doubles, the No. 1 team of Sean Cockley and Drew Marzano won by default, and Caleb Adams-Hull and Joey Peacentini gained a win by default at No. 2.

On May 10, Morgan hosted Cromwell and won 7-0. Sam Moran won 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) at No. 1 singles; Patrick Markovics earned the 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 2; Newfield won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3; Tino won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4; and Johnson prevailed at the No. 5 position. In doubles play, Murray and Chris Nuzzo won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1; and Adams-Hull and Marzano won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2.

The next day, the Huskies beat Valley Regional at home, 6-1. In singles, Moran won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1; Markovics won 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2; Newfield won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3; and Johnson won 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 at No. 4. In doubles, Murray and Nuzzo won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1; while Cockley and Marzano prevailed 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.

Girls’ Tennis

The Huskies won one of their three matches last week and are now 4-12.

On May 8, Morgan hosted North Branford and won 4-3. Senior captain Emma Phelps won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. As for doubles, Brenna Andrews and Lily Cummings won 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1; Becca Cockley and Ingrid Rodriguez won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2; and Bea Atengco and Melanie Corretti won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3.

On May 10, the Huskies lost 7-0 at Cromwell. The next day, Morgan squad lost at Valley Regional, 6-1.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Huskies won both of their matches last week to improve to 8-7 and clinch a trip to the State Tournament.

On May 8, Morgan won at North Branford 15-8. Zakary Johnson had six goals; Jake Anselmo had five goals and an assist; AJ Mastriano had a goal and an assist; and Nate Hornyak had four assists.

Two days later, the Huskies hosted Cromwell at the Indian River Complex and won 14-1.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Morgan dropped three recent contests and is now 0-14 this year.

The Huskies took a 20-8 home loss to North Branford on May 9. Madison Seegar scored three goals, and Georgia Nye scored two goals, while Erin LeViness, Madeline Stopkoski, and Erin Lindsay each added a goal for Morgan.

On May 11, Morgan hosted Guilford and lost 16-5. On May 13, the Huskies lost at Ellington, 11-4.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

On May 9, the Huskies hosted a Shoreline conference quad-meet against Creed, Hale-Ray, and Westbrook. Kate Daley improved on her personal-best time by 10 seconds in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:29.93. Other athletes earning first place were Alyssa Robinson in the 100 high hurdles (16.69 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (52.50); Courtney Viglione in the 400 (1:04.06); Madison Emmi in the 800 (2:44.08); Taylor Watt in the 200 (28.15); plus Andie Carse, Charlotte Davenport, and Mikayla Mancini in the high jump as each athlete cleared 4 feet-6 inches.

The Morgan relay teams also did well. Placing first in the 4x800 were Allison Gardner, Issy Ranaudo, Maura Kelly, Daley with a time of 10:42.91. Earning first in the 4x400 were Kelly, Ranaudo, Gardner, and Viglione with a time of 4:25.87.

On May 13, Morgan competed at the Running Rams Invitational hosted by Old Saybrook and placed seventh with 47.75 points. Daley earned first in the 3,200 with a time of 11:41.04.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Huskies were at the Running Rams Invitational and scored 41 points to finish in seventh place. Bryce Thomas earned first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.69 seconds.

Baseball

Morgan stands at 14-7 after losing two of three last week.

The Huskies won at Coginchaug, 5-0, on May 8. Cooper Thompson scattered three hits on the mound in the shutout. Thompson also had a double and two RBI, while Nick Caprio added two RBI.

On May 10, Morgan lost at Cromwell, 3-1.

The next day, the Huskies took a 4-1 loss at Haddam-Killingworth. Cooper Thompson drove in a run in the top of the first, but H-K scored three runs in the bottom of the inning, and led the rest of the way.

Softball

The Huskies played three games last week and won one of them to improve to 7-9 and stand one win away from states.

On May 8, Morgan lost at Haddam-Killingworth 9-6. The Huskies then lost 12-4 at Coginchaug on May 10. The next day, Morgan won at Cromwell, 13-0.

Boys’ Golf

Morgan won one of its four contests last week and is now 5-9.

On May 9, the Morgan squad hosted Hand at Clinton Country Club and lost 189-193. The next day, the Huskies were home against Portland and lost 175-194. On May 11, Morgan faced off against Branford and East Haven at Pine Orchard Country Club. The Huskies defeated East Haven 177-200, but lost to Branford 163-177.
