East Haven Baseball Grabs Two Quinnipiac Wins; Every Other Team Gets at Least One Victory

Baseball

The Easties’ baseball squad recorded two Quinnipiac Division victories last week to stand at 4-1 in divisional play with an overall record of 11-6. The Yellowjackets would have won the Quinnipiac title if they defeated Branford at home May 15 (after press time), and there are also other scenarios in which East Haven can take the title.

Last week, East Haven started off with a 7-1 victory at division opponent North Haven on May 8. Nick Guarino scattered 10 hits over seven innings and allowed one run on the mound to earn the victory. East Haven scored all seven of its runs in the fourth inning as Mark Smith and Ryan Spano had two hits each in the breakout frame. The win avenged a previous 8-2 defeat against North Haven.

On May 10, East Haven took a 1-0 loss to Foran in Milford. Nick Kraszewski pitched a great game for the Yellowjackets, whose offense was held to just one hit. Foran won the game in walk-off fashion by plating a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

East Haven closed out its week with a 5-1 victory at Xavier in another Quinnipiac Division contest. East Haven’s win completed a season sweep of the Falcons.

Boys’ Tennis

East Haven won a pair of matches last week to improve to 5-10 for the season.

Last week’s action started on May 9 as East Haven posted a convincing 7-0 win over Law. In singles play, Tony Cofrancesco won 6-3, 3-0 (default); Spencer Goldberg won 6-4, 7-5; Brendan So prevailed 6-1, 6-2; and Nick Vessicchio won 6-2, 6-1. At doubles, Rob Scalese and Jake Zito won 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5); Doug Comesanas and Seth Proto grabbed a 6-1, 6-3 victory; plus Christian Ramirez and Anthony Petolla won 8-2 (default).

When the Yellowjackets took the court on May 11, they edged out Lyman Hall by a 4-3 score. Vessicchio won 8-6 (default), while Ramirez won 6-3, 6-1. For doubles, Proto and Comesanas won 6-2, 6-1 for East Haven, which also saw Nick Kluth and Petolla claim a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 win.

The Yellowjackets closed out the week with a 4-3 loss to Branford on May 12. The Yellowjackets’ doubles duos swept as Scalese and Zito won 6-4, 7-6 (7-5); Proto and Comesanas won 6-2, 4-6, 7-5; and Kluth/Ramirez were victorious, 6-1, 6-4.

Girls’ Tennis

The Yellowjackets improved to 5-9 this season by winning one of their three matches last week.

The Easties opened play against Shelton at home on May 8 and took a 4-3 defeat. Jenna Pane and Devyn Gargano both won their singles matches as Pane won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, and Gargano won 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. East Haven’s other win came from No. 3 doubles squad of Victoria Gaudino and Alexis Pendziwater, who won a 7-5, 6-2 decision.

East Haven followed that up with a 6-1 victory over Career on May 10. East Haven swept singles action as Pane won 6-1, 6-2; Gargano won 6-2, 6-4; Karla Gonzalez won 6-0, 6-0; and Juliana Mikulski prevailed 6-3, 6-3. For doubles, Autumn Hernandez and Sandy Nguyen won 6-0, 6-2, while Jessa Imperati and Pendziwater blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0.

On May 11, East Haven closed out the week with a 4-3 loss against Foran. Gonzalez claimed victory in her singles match, 4-6, 6-0, (default). On the doubles side, Hernandez and Nguyen won 8-6, 6-2, and Gaudino and Pendziwater won 6-4, 7-5. Nhi Trinh and Mikayla Raffone lost a competitive three-setter by a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 score.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

East Haven swept its most recent meet by topping Branford 74-67 and Law 73-68 last week. The Yellowjackets now have five wins on the season.

East Haven won the 4x100 relay as Jay Donaldson, Jordan Ingram, Dom Manna, and McClay Marshall sprinted to a time of 44.8 seconds. Reinaldo Martinez was on man a mission as he won three individual events. Martinez took first in the 110 high hurdles at 16.7 seconds, won the 300 hurdles the 43.1, and was first for the triple jump at 35 feet-5.5 inches. Niam Coward won the shot put with a throw of 44 feet-6.5 inches, as well as the discus at 106-4 inches. Jay Donaldson won the 100-meter dash in 11.2 seconds, while Jordan Ingram bettered everyone in the 200 with his time of 23.1.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Yellowjackets claimed their fourth win of the season with a 79-69 victory over Foran on May 8.

East Haven saw four individual winners at the meet. Sydney Marquardt was victorious in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, while Molly Mazzucco’s height of 5 feet earned her the victory in the high jump. Haley Montesanto won the 300 hurdles with a time of 51.4 seconds, plus Katie Maffeo won the 800 by running 2:43. The Easties’ 4x400 relay team also claimed a win with a time of 4:31.

Golf

East Haven won one of its five matches last week to move its overall record to 2-11 this season.

On May 9, Sheehan topped East Haven 159-199. Matt Latella and Joe Aloi both led the way for the Yellowjackets by scoring a 48. Josh Palmer shot a 51, and Logan Hamilton had a 52.

The next day, East Haven lost to North Branford 168-172, but topped Wilbur Cross 172-196 in a tri-match. Aloi shot a 40 on the round, while Latella finished with a 43, Hamilton shot a 44, and Palmer had a score of 45.

East Haven closed out the week on May 11 by shooting a 200 to take defeats against Branford (163) and Morgan (177). Aloi shot a 44, Latella had a 45, Palmer shot a 52, and Mike Moscato turned in a score of 59.
