An All-Around Excellent Week for Old Saybrook Athletics

Girls’ Tennis

The Old Saybrook girls’ tennis squad has won four of its last five matches and now sports a record of 14-3 this spring. The Rams are in second place in the Shoreline Conference and ranked seventh in Class S. Seniors Erin Stangel and Isabella Luciani are both undefeated at 17-0 on the season.

On May 8, Old Saybrook won 7-0 at East Hampton. In singles, Rosie Rothman won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1; Tanya Gianitsos won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2; Stangel won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3; and Luciani won 7-5, 6-0 No. 4. For doubles, Lucy Marinelli and Sam Fucci won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1; Jill Hirst and Amy Young won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2; and Arina Jiang and Emma Rogan prevailed 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3.

The following day, the Rams won 4-3 at Valley Regional. For singles, Rothman won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1; Gianitsos won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2; Stangel won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3; and Luciani won 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot.

On May 10, Old Saybrook hosted Haddam-Killingworth and won 6-1. Gianitsos won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles; Stangel won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3; and Luciani won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4. In doubles play, Marinelli and Fucci won 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 1; Hirst and Young won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2; and Rogan and Jiangwon 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3.

On May 12, the Rams hosted Old Lyme and lost 4-3. In singles, Gianitsos won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2; Stangel won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3; and Luciani claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4.

The next day, Old Saybrook hosted Valley Regional and won 4-3. For singles, Rothman won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1; Gianitsos won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2; Stangel won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3; and Luciani won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4.

Boys’ Tennis

The Rams were victorious in all four of their matches last week to improve to 15-2.

On May 8, Old Saybrook won at home versus East Hampton, 7-0. On May 9, the Rams hosted Valley Regional and won 7-0. The day after that, Old Saybrook won 4-2 at Haddam-Killingworth. Then May 12, the Rams preaviled 5-2 at Old Lyme.

Baseball

Old Saybrook posted a pair of recent victories to improve to 8-9 and earn a spot in the State Tournament.

On May 7, the Rams hosted East Hampton and won 7-3. Jaden Rolon went 3-for-3 with two runs, Haydon Lockhart was 1-for-2 with three RBI, and Dan Cote was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

On May 8, Old Saybrook lost at Old Lyme 7-5. Jack Colella was 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, Phillip Ledwith went 2-for-3 with a run, and Joe Finnigan went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Two days later, the Rams hosted Lyman Memorial and lost 8-1. Patrick Kelly was 2-for-2 for the Rams.

The next day, Old Saybrook won 8-2 at Westbrook to clinch its spot in states. Rolon went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, Cote went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run, while Colella was 1-for-2 with a RBI.

Softball

The Rams splits four recent matchups to stand at 7-11 and move within one win of a State Tournament berth.

Old Saybrook won 5-3 at Old Lyme on May 7. Kirsten King and Megan Schulmeister both singled in the first inning, after which Maeve Foley drove in Schulmeister to make it 1-0. Old Lyme tied the game in bottom of the first. In the fourth, Foley doubled, Carly Michaud singled, and Hannah LeMire singled to bring both of them home. Old Lyme tied the game again by the sixth. In the top of the seventh, King singled to get on base, and then Chloe Root drove her in with a two-run homer for a 5-3 advantage.

The Rams hosted East Hampton and lost 15-4 on May 8. Sarah Howley and Sarah Lombardi each had a single, while Chloe Root hit a double.

On May 10, Old Saybrook won 8-7 at Westbrook. Old Saybrook led the entire game. In the bottom of the sixth, Westbrook made it 5-4. The Rams scored three in the sixth, and the Knights made it 8-7 in their half. Old Saybrook staved off Westbrook’s offense in the seventh to win.

The Rams later hosted Hale-Ray and lost 4-3. Hale-Ray led 1-0 after the first inning. In the second, Foley cranked a solo home run to tie it up. Hale-Ray led 2-1 after four. The Rams took the lead in the fifth with a double by Root and a RBI single by Michaud. Foley singled to move Michaud over, and Anna Joseph drove Michaud in. Hale-Ray took the 4-3 lead in the seventh and hung on for the win.

Golf

The Rams won both their home matches at par-35 Fenwick Golf Course last week and are 8-5.

On May 8, the Rams beat Haddam-Killingworth 171-185. Kyle Savino had Old Saybrook’s lowest score with a 41. Jason Rothman shot a 42, Jay DePalermo scored a 43, and Jack Walsh scored a 45.

Old Saybrook beat Coginchaug 172-174 on May 11. DePalermo had a score of 40, Savino was next with 42, Dean Nobile had a 44, and Rothman shot 46.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Old Saybrook hosted the Running Rams Invitational and finished first with a score of 131 points.

Tyra Finkeldey beat the former pole vault meet record of 10 feet-6 inches by clearing 10-7. The quartet of Jael Givehand, Alyssa Diaz, Jessica Stratton, and Ingrid Boland earned first place in the 4x800-meter relay with 10:13.67. Grace Hanratty was first with 5:23.80 at 1,600. In the 400, Devyn King’s time of 1:01.22 was good for first place.

Boys Outdoor Track

Old Saybrook finished in second place at its Running Rams Invitational by recording 88 points. Jalen Johnson’s time of 53.80 seconds earned him first in the 400, while Eric Sultini’s took first in the 800 at 2:00.86.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Old Saybrook won two of three last week and is now 5-9.

The Rams traveled to Vinal Tech and triumphed 17-2 on May 8, Christos Ellinas had four goals and four assists; Jefferson Yanza had four goals and two assists; Jack Olivieri had three goals and three assists; and Ashton Reina provided three goals and two assists.

Old Saybrook faced off at home against Valley Regional and lost 11-2 on May 11. Cameron Grillo scored two goals, and Yanza had one assist.

On May 13, the Rams won 17-3 at Bristol Eastern. Keaton Roarick had 17 saves for Old Saybrook. Grillo had seven goals and three assists, while Ellinas had six goals and five assists.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Rams split a pair of recent contests to move to 8-7 on the spring.

On May 11, the Rams were at Valley Regional and lost 14-11. Old Saybrook hosted Griswold on May 13 and won by a 17-6 final.
