Westbrook Boys’ Tennis Goes to 16-0; Girls Also See Undefeated Week

Boys’ Tennis

The Westbrook boys’ tennis team went 3-for-3 in last week’s matches and remains undefeated with a record of 16-0.

On May 8, Westbrook hosted Haddam-Killingworth and won 6-1. In singles play, senior Dave Amendola won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2; sophomore Nate Comment was victorious 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 3 position; Jason Raunikar earned the 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4; and junior Kevin Dickey won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5. In doubles play, the senior duo of Phil Hartzell and Austin Herzy defeated their opponents 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1; and sophomore Jack Lyman and junior Binak Cecunjanin won at the No. 2 position by default.

On May 10, the Knights went to Old Lyme and defeated the Wildcats 4-3. In singles, senior Gus Marx won 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 1; and Raunikar won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4. In doubles play, Hartzell and Herzy earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1; and Dickey and junior Binak Cecunjanin won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2.

On May 11, Westbrook was in Durham to face the Blue Devils and won 6-1. For singles, Marx won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1; Amendola won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2; senior Dylan Martinson won his matchup 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot; Hartzell won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4; and Herzy prevailed 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5. In doubles play, senior duo Tim Knudsen and Matt Ossa won 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 at the No. 1 spot.

Girls’ Tennis

The Knights had three matches last week and won them all to improve to 16-1 on the season.

On May 8, Westbrook went to Haddam-Killingworth to face the Cougars and triumphed 6-1. In singles play, senior Casey Burns was victorious by a 6-0, 6-2 score in the No. 1 position; sophomore Sara Farnoli defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2; freshman Sarah Davey won 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 at No. 3; and senior Aerial Ulanowicz earned the 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 win at No. 4. For doubles, the junior duo of Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Frabizi won 6-0, 6-7 (3-6), 6-3 at No. 1; and sophomore Savannah Marshall and junior Victoria Koplas won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2.

On May 10, the Knights hosted Old Lyme and defeated the Wildcats 5-2. Burns won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles; Sara Farnoli won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2; Olivia Frabizi won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3; and Aerial Ulanowicz earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4. Marshall and Koplas won 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-1) at No. 2 doubles.

Two days later, Westbrook faced off against North Branford and won 4-3. In singles, Burns won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1; and Farnoli won 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. In doubles play, Marshall and Koplas won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2; and the junior duo of Lexi Vumbeck and Alyssa Esposito claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Westbrook competed in a Shoreline Conference quad-meet at Morgan with Creed and Hale-Ray on May 9. Westbrook defeated Creed 68-22 and Hale-Ray 75-21, but lost to Morgan 72-61.

On May 13, the Knights competed at the Running Rams Invitational hosted by Old Saybrook and placed fourth overall with a score of 63.25 points. The Knights took first place in the 4x100-meter relay as the team of Jake Marciniec, Maxwell Morris, Sean Scully, and Andrew Naccaratto ran a time of 46.01. Morris also took first in the high jump by clearing a height of 6 feet-2 inches. In the discus throw, Vincent Dyer earned first place with the distance of 144 feet-3 inches.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Knights participated in a quad-meet Morgan last week. Westbrook defeated Hale-Ray 119-18 and Creed 121-10, while taking a 74-66 loss to the host Huskies.

On May 13, the Knights went to Old Saybrook’s Running Rams Invitational and finished fifth by tallying 51 points. Trizah Blomquist grabbed first-place honors in the triple jump with the distance of 33 feet-3.5 inches.

Baseball

Westbrook took three defeats last week and is now 3-14 on the season.

On May 8, the Knights went to East Hampton to face the Bellringers and lost 9-1. Sophomore David McCain went 2-for-3 for the Knights and scored their run.

On May 10, Westbrook hosted Old Lyme and lost 9-2. Junior Jack Hayes went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI. Sophomore Cameron Marshall was 2-for-3 with a RBI.

On May 12, the Knights lost at home to Old Saybrook, 8-2.
