The Valley Regional softball team won three of its five games last week to move to 10-6 and earn its spot in postseason play.
On May 8, Valley traveled to Cromwell and won 9-4. The Warriors plated three runs in both the second and third innings to take a 6-1 lead on their way to the win. Addy Bullis pitched a complete game with 14 strikeouts for the Warriors. Junior Alex Figuenick went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, a RBI, and two runs scored, while senior Morgan Bakoledis was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
On May 10, the Warriors were at North Branford for a doubleheader. In the first game, Valley lost 5-0. Bullis went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Valley outhit North Branford 13-12 in the nightcap, but took a 7-3 defeat. Valley trailed 6-1 before scoring two runs in the sixth, although the Warriors were unable to get any more against Thunderbirds’ pitcher Sydney Senerchia. Figuenick and fellow junior Rylee DaRe both went 2-for-4 with a run scored for Valley.
On May 12, the Warriors were back home to face off against Coginchaug and won a pitcher’s duel by a 2-1 final. The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the third, but the Warriors tied it up in the sixth on sophomore Abby Cunningham’s single. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Bullis drove home the winning run to secure the win for the Warriors after pitching a one-hit gem.
The next day, Valley hosted Somers and won 5-1. Valley got out to an early lead by scoring a run in the first, two more in the second, and one in the third to make it 4-0. Somers scored its only run in the top of the sixth inning, and the Warriors came back with a run in the bottom half. Bullis had another strong performance on the mound by allowing just seven hits and one run through seven innings.
Baseball
The Warriors were victorious in all three of their games week and clinched a playoff bid with their record of 9-9.
On May 8, Valley hosted North Branford and shut out the Thunderbirds 5-0.
Two days later, the Warriors traveled to Durham to go up against the Coginchaug and prevailed 7-1. Valley took a one-run lead in the second inning, made it 2-0 in the fourth, and added another in the sixth before putting a four spot on the board in the seventh. Junior Colin Sparaco was on the mound and threw another beauty for the Warriors, while adding two RBI at the plate. Senior Derek Hill had a double and two RBI, plus sophomore catcher Josh Ross also drove in a run.
On May 12, Valley hosted non-conference squad Wilcox Tech and won 11-4.
Boys Lacrosse
Valley played three games last week and won two of them to improve its record to 12-2 on the season.
On May 8, the Warriors went up against the Wildcats in Old Lyme and won 10-9 to complete a season sweep of the defending Shoreline Conference champions. Senior captain Jonathan Brophy netted five goals with an assist, while sophomore Sean Cole recorded five assists. Senior Rocky Harpin had two goals and dished out two assists, and junior Charlie Ferrucci had two goals. Senior captain Ryan Davis added a goal.
On May 11, Valley was on the road in Old Saybrook and claimed a decisive 11-2 victory. Freshman Davis Burleson scored five goals to go with an assist, Harpin scored four goals and added two assists, Brophy provided two goals and two assists, and Cole was once again in a giving mood as he had four assists.
Two days later, the Warriors finished their week in Hamden with a 14-12 loss to the Green Dragons. Brophy, Ferrucci, and Burleson all scored three goals apiece, Ferrucci and Brophy both also added an assist, Davis scored two goals, Harpin had a goal with an assist, and Cole assisted on three goals.
Crew
The Valley Regional crew team competed in the Founders Day Regatta at Lake Waramaug on May 7. This annual regatta was established in 1959 and is hosted by The Gunnery.
The Warriors’ first boat recorded a time of 6:26, their second boat finished with a time of 6:23, and the third boat clocked in at 6:29. Participating in the regatta for Valley were Ally Brennan, Electra Cassells, Emily Hutchison, Emma Carey, Courtlin Sicignamo, Caitlyn Bouchard, Tessa LeMay, Liza Miezejeski, Maddy Just, Sage Tisdale, Iris Chirinos, Kim Berardis, Rachel Dona, and Lily O’Neil.
Girls’ Tennis
Valley gained a split of last week’s matches to stand at 7-7 on the season. The Warriors can qualify for states by winning two of their last four contests.
On May 9, the Warriors hosted Old Saybrook and lost 4-3. Old Saybrook swept the singles matches, while Valley swept the doubles matchups. Junior Ellie Flynn and freshman Caroline Baldwin won their matchup at the No. 1 doubles spot, 6-4, 6-2; the senior duo of Jenna Farley and Lindsey Lent won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2; and the sophomore pairing of Tori Adamczyk and Allie Champion won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3.
On May 10, Valley traveled to Portland and won 6-1.
On May 11, the Warriors defeated Morgan at home, 6-1. Senior Callie Riggio won 7-6, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles position; junior Emma Hunt was victorious, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2; and junior Izzy Bowden won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3. In doubles, Flynn and Baldwin won 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1; Farley and Lent earned the 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2; and Adamczyk and Champion won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.
Boys’ Tennis
The Warriors won one of their three recent matches and are now 10-5 this year.
On May 9, Valley visited Old Saybrook and took a 7-0 defeat.
The next day, the Warriors hosted Portland and won 6-1 against the Highlanders. In singles play, junior Jeff Riggio defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1; senior Hal Jones was victorious, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2; and Buddy Haydu earned the 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 4 position. Valley won at No. 5 singles and both doubles matchups by forfeit.
The Warriors closed the week with a duel at Morgan and lost 6-1. Junior Kevin Baldwin won his match, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5, at the No. 4 singles spot.
On May 13, the Warriors were in Old Saybrook and lost to the Rams, 4-3.
Golf
The Warriors matched up at North Branford at Indian Springs Golf Course last week. Valley took a 194-215 to the Thunderbirds on May 9.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
Valley Regional competed at the Running Rams Invitational that was hosted by Old Saybrook and placed sixth overall with a score of 47.75 points.
Travis Baldwin took first place in the pole vault by clearing 12 feet-6 inches, and Alex Lepore took first in the triple jump with a distance of 38 feet-0.5 inches.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Warriors’ participated in Old Saybrook’s Running Rams Invitational on May 13. Valley tied for 11th place by tallying 31 points.
