North Haven’s Track Teams Reign Atop the Oronoque; Boys’ Lacrosse Wins 8th Straight, While Girls Make States

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The North Haven boys’ outdoor track squad clinched the Oronoque Division title by defeating Career during a home tri-meet on May 9, beating the Panthers 125-21 to finish at 4-0 in Oronoque contests. The Indians also lost 99-51 against Shelton at the meet.

Omar Gebril took first place in the 200 (22.9), 400 (49.7), and the javelin (145-2.75) to lead the Indians. Michael Tran won the discus (108-11.75), Josh Bryson prevailed in the high jump (5-6), while Eric Spignesi won the pole vault (9-6).

Then on May 11, North Haven hosted Sheehan won 81-59 to finish the regular season with an overall record of 12-4. Bryson had a huge meet as he claimed victory in the 110 high hurdles (16.0), 300 intermediate hurdles (43.4), and the high jump (5-4). Bryson also ran with Jack Opramolla, Jianni Snipes, and Ethan Okwuosa on the victorious 4x400 relay, which recorded a time of 3:42.1. Gebril took first in the 200 (22.3) and the 400 (52.4). Michael Tran won the discus (111-8), Chris DeBridgita was first in the javelin (116-7.75), and Eric Milliard won the shot put (44-11.25).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Indians wrapped up their regular season with a record of 11-2, plus the Oronoque Division title after competing against Career and Shelton in a home tri-meet on May 10. North Haven took its division crown with 123-27 victory versus Career that put the Indians’ mark at 4-0 in the Oronoque. North Haven also took an 88-62 defeat against Shelton that day.

Erica Marriott put together an exceptional showing by taking first place in the 100 (12.0), the 200 (25.7), and the long jump (15-11.5). Sarah Vanacore claimed victory for both the shot put (36-8.5) and the discus (94-6). Elise Symon won the 1,600 (5:35.5), while Ashley Brown was first in the 400 at 62.1 seconds.

Boys’ Lacrosse

North Haven notched two more victories and has now won eight straight games to go with an overall record of 12-1. After earning a 12-6 win over Avon, North Haven faced off against SCC rival Hand and prevailed 7-4 last week.

On May 8, the Indians hosted non-conference squad Avon at North Haven Athletic Complex and won 12-6. PJ Saracino scored three goals and dished off three assists, Zack Orth and Bowen Brennan both scored two goals with an assist, and Korbin Pecora and Jack Broggi both scored two goals. Max Sullivan added a goal and Tom Dodge had an assist. Dustin Byrnes made six saves in net to get the win.

Two days later, North Haven was home for Hand at Vanacore Field and won 7-4. The Tigers led 3-1 at halftime before the Indians outscored them 4-0 in the third quarter and 2-1 in the fourth on their way to the victory. Byrnes came up big with 10 saves for North Haven. Brennan scored three goals and had an assist, Saracino had two goals with one assist, Orth and Dodge added goals, plus Pecora and Sullivan each had an assist.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Indians won two of their three games last week to improve to 7-5 and clinch a berth in the Class M State Tournament for the third straight year.

On May 8, North Haven hosted non-conference foe North Branford at Vanacore Field and dropped a 14-13 decision. The Indians battled back from a 10-6 deficit to take an 11-10 lead, but North Branford came back and scored the deciding goal with less than two minutes left. Madison Fredericks scored four goals for North Haven, while Kylie Brandt and Haley Murray scored three apiece. Courtney Babbidge had a goal with two assists, Jordyn Aurora scored a goal and had an assist, plus the Indians also received assists from Brandt, Annie Uyeki, Clara Pellegrino, Kaylie Sahirul, and Callyn Priebe.

The next day, North Haven earned a 16-13 win at Foran. The Indians grabbed a 12-6 halftime advantage and held on for the victory. Brandt had five goals and an assist, Uyeki scored three goals to go with two assists, Fredericks had two goals and two assists, Aurora scored a goal and had three assists, Babbidge and Murray both netted a pair of goals and added an assist, Sahirul scored one goal, and Pellegrino contributed an assist. Goalie Samantha Langner made 11 saves.

The Indians closed the week by posting a 14-11 victory versus Sacred Heart Academy at North Haven Athletic Complex on May 11. North Haven led 7-6 at halftime and won the second half 7-5. Brandt and Uyeki both scored four goals, Babbidge and Pellegrino had two goals each, plus Murray and Sahirul both scored one. Brandt had two assists, while Uyeki, Murray, and Pellegrino each had one. Langner had nine saves.

Softball

The Indians played four games last week and came away with two victories to stand with a mark of 13-3. North Haven is also 5-1 in the Oronoque Division.

On May 8, North Haven hosted divisional opponent Sheehan and won 6-5. Sarah Lombardi hit a pinch-hit, three-run home run that put North Haven up for good in the fifth inning. Caroline Gabrielle went 2-for-2 with an RBI, including a home run, and Laurissa Amaker added a double. Lauren Card earned the win in the circle by scattering 11 hits, while allowing just two earned runs, one walk, and striking out five.

The following afternoon, North Haven had a game at Law and won 6-1. Card pitched a complete game for her 12th victory. She only gave up three hits with one walk and struck out nine. Caitlin Ranciato went 3-for-4 with two RBI, plus Ariana DelVecchio added a double.

The day after that, the Indians lost a 1-0 contest in West Haven. The defeat ended a 13-game winning streak for North Haven. Card only allowed three hits to the Blue Devils, who scored the game’s lone run in the fourth inning. DelVecchio hit another double for the Indians.

Then on May 11, North Haven took a 7-5 loss at divisional foe Lauralton Hall.

Baseball

After losing to East Haven and Branford, North Haven closed out last week with a 12-1 victory versus Shelton on May 1. The Indians are now 10-6 overall and 3-2 in Quinnipiac Division play.

On May 8, North Haven hosted Quinnipiac opponent East Haven and lost 7-1. It was a scoreless game until East Haven put up seven runs in the fourth inning. Luca Lawrence pitched into the fourth for North Haven, with Brendan Clark, Griffin Bottomley, Tom Myjak, and Mark Tantorski all working out of the bullpen. Myjak tossed 2.1 scoreless innings and Tantorski pitched a clean seventh. Peyton Farina went 4-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, and drove home Jake Tantorski for North Haven’s run. Steven Erbe and Chris Stevens added two hits apiece.

Two days later, the Indians dropped an 8-2 home decision in a divisional game against Branford. Alphonse Fusco singled home North Haven’s two runs in the seventh inning. Preston Young pitched 3.2 innings, Myjak threw one inning, Hunter Garthwait pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, and Mark Tantorski threw a scoreless seventh.

The following evening, North Haven had a game in Shelton and won 12-1.

Golf

North Haven picked up wins versus Hillhouse and Foran before losing to Law last week to move to 5-7.

The Indians posted a 179-211 victory over Hillhouse at Alling Memorial Golf Club on May 8.

The following afternoon, the Indians hosted Foran at Wallingford Country Club and scored a 198-206 victory. Matt Mezzano (45), Steve Pugliese (49), Kameron DeMartin (50), and Alex Kirtland (54) totaled North Haven’s score, while Noah Garrison was right there with a 56.

Two days later, North Haven had a home matchup against Law and lost 190-194. Gianni Abate was the match medalist with his low score of 42. Mezzano had a 48, while Pugliese and Kirtland both shot a 52 the round out the Indians’ score. DeMartin shot a score of 56.

Boys’ Tennis

The Indians were victorious in all three of last week’s matches to improve to 8-5 and stand just one win shy of a spot in the Class L State Championship.

North Haven posted a 7-0 home shutout over Cross on May 8. Johannes Eisenberg (6-1, 6-4), Nick Cristante (6-0, 6-), Jack Steinman (6-1, 6-1), and Billy Sgro (6-0, 6-2) won their singles matches. The doubles teams of Matt Carroll and Riley Powell (6-0, 6-0), Mike Gagliardi and Quinn Dallai (6-1, 6-0), and Max Petruzziello and Jake Barra (6-0, 6-0) also prevailed.

The next day, North Haven hosted Career and won another 7-0 decision. Cristante prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles; Sgro won 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot; Ryan Griffiths was a 6-0, 6-0 victor at No. 3; and Gagliardi won by forfeit at No. 4. Eisenberg and Steinman joined forces to play No. 1 doubles and claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory. The teams of Powell and Carroll, plus Petruzziello and Dallai garnered wins via forfeit.

The Indians closed out their week by claiming a 6-1 victory at Law on May 15. Cristante won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles; Steinman won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3; and Sgro won by the score of 7-6, 4-6, 11-9 at the No. 4 spot. North Haven’s doubles duos of Carroll-Powell (6-2, 6-4); Gagliardi-Dallai (6-2, 6-0); and Petruzziello-Laekhram Singh (6-0, 6-1) were also triumphant.

Girls’ Tennis

North Haven lost two of its three matches last week and is now 14-3. The Indians dropped contests against Guilford and Amity before getting a win versus Mercy.

North Haven lost a 5-2 matchup at Guilford on May 8. Julia Migliorini prevailed 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match, while Hillary Hoyt won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. The Indians’ No. 3 doubles team of Avery Hill and Katrina Nadolny gave an outstanding effort in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 defeat.

Two days later, North Haven dropped a 4-3 home decision versus Amity. Migliorini recorded a convincing 6-1, 6-0 victory against fellow stalwart Daphne Kreiger in the No. 1 singles match. Hillary Hoyt won 6-3, 3-0 (default) at No. 3, while Rachel Petry prevailed 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot.

On May 11, North Haven recorded a 5-2 win over Mercy in Rocky Hill. Migliorini (6-0, 6-0); Olivia Hoyt (6-2, 6-2); Hillary Hoyt (6-4, 6-1); and Petry (6-2, 6-2) all prevailed in singles play. The Indians also received a 6-1, 6-2 victory from their No. 2 doubles team of Sejal Atluru and Zoe Bowerman.
