Westbrook’s Tennis Squads Stay Hot; Softball Has a Big Week at the Dish


Boys’ Tennis

The Knights’ boys’ tennis team claimed three wins in three days last week to remain undefeated at 13-0.

On May 2, Westbrook hosted Valley Regional and defeated the Warriors 6-1. Senior Dave Amendola grabbed the 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles; sophomore Nate Comment won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3; senior Dylan Martinson defeated his opponent, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4; and senior Jason Raunikar won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5. As for doubles, the senior duo of Phil Hartzell and Austin Herzy won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1, while juniors Kevin Dickey and Binak Cecunjanin won, 6-4 6-3 at No. 2.

The next day, the Knights won an exciting 4-3 contest at Old Saybrook. Amendola won 6-4, 7-5; Comment prevailed 6-4, 6-2; and Raunikar won 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-2. In doubles play, Hartzell and Herzy won 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). The overall match was tied at 3-3 when Raunikar’s victory clinched the victory the Knights.

On May 4, Westbrook defeated East Hampton 7-0 to close out the week.

Girls’ Tennis

Westbrook collected four more victories to move its mark to 13-1 on the season.

Westbrook posted a 5-2 win at Valley Regional on May 2. In singles, senior Casey Burns triumphed 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1; sophomore Sara Farnoli claimed a 6-4, 6-1 victory in the No. 2 spot; and freshman Sarah Davey won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3. In doubles play, sophomore Savannah Marshall and junior Victoria Koplas earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2; and the junior duo of Lexi Vumback and Alyssa Esposito won their match 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3.

On May 3, Westbrook faced Old Saybrook at home and won 4-3. Burns won 6-0, 6-0; while Farnoli posted a 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-3 victory. For doubles, juniors Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1; plus Marshall and Koplas won 6-0, 6-1.

On May 4, Westbrook defeat both Portland and East Hampton by 7-0 scores. Against Portland, Burns won 6-0, 6-0; Farnoli grabbed a 6-3, 6-1 win; Davey won 6-3, 7-5; and Aerial Ulanowicz defeated her opponent, 6-4, 6-2. In doubles, Marilyn Ulanowicz and Frabizi won 6-1, 6-1; Marshall and Koplas won 6-0, 6-1; and Vumbeck and Esposito claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Versus East Hampton, Burns won 6-0, 6-0; Farnoli won 6-4, 6-1; Davey won a tough match, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4; and Aerial Ulanowicz was a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) victor. In doubles, Marilyn Ulanowicz and Frabizi won 6-3, 7-5; Marshall and Koplas won 6-1, 6-0; and Vumbeck and Esposito claimed the win, 6-2, 6-0.

Softball

The Knights were triumphant in two of their three recent matchups to improve to 5-10 this year.

Westbrook opened the week at Hillhouse prevailed 28-2 on May 1. Senior Alexa Mulvihill pitched a complete game with six strikeouts and, at the plate, she went 4-for-6 with a double, a home run, six RBI, and two runs scored. Senior Biance Ferrucci was 6-for-6 with six RBI and four runs scored, while fellow senior Kylie Magee was 2-for-5 with a double, five RBI, and two runs scored.

On May 3, the Knights hosted Hale-Ray and lost 21-7. Ferrucci went 3-for-3 with two home runs, two runs scored, and three RBI.

The next day, the Knights went to Portland and won 15-0. Mulvihill and freshman Callie Newberg combined for the shutout over five innings. Ferrucci continued her sizzling week by going 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBI, and two runs scored. Freshman Alivia Ciarcia was 1-for-3 with two RBI, while sophomore Jamie Merola went 1-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored.

Baseball

Westbrook won one of its four games last week to stand at 3-11.

On April 30, the Knights lost a 12-6 game against the Hale-Ray at home. The next day, Westbrook faced Creed-Hillhouse at home and won 8-3. Westbrook trailed 3-2 before scoring six runs in the sixth inning.

Next, the Knights were on the road to face Hale-Ray and lost 9-5 on May 3. Finally, Westbrook traveled to Portland and lost 6-2 on May 4.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Westbrook competed at a recent tri-meet against Old Lyme with Morgan. The Knights beat Old Lyme 88-43 and Morgan 81-62.

Junior Andrew Naccaratto claimed first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.1 seconds and also won the 200-meter dash in 23.8 seconds. Senior Kevin Morrissey won first place in shot put with a distance of 38 feet-1 inch. Junior Elijah Panzera claimed victory in javelin with the distance of 138 feet-4 inches. In the discus, junior Vincent Dyer’s distance of 131 feet-8 inches won him first place. In the high jump, senior Maxwell Morris cleared 6 feet for the victory. Junior Michael Leary won the long jump with a distance of 17 feet-10.5 inches. In the pole vault, sophomore Michael Gingras cleared a height of 9 feet-6 inches to win first place. Westbrook’s 4x100-meter relay team earned first with a time of 45.7 seconds.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Knights won against both Old Lyme (106-45) and Morgan (75-69) in last week’s tri-meet.

Junior Erin Metcalfe won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.8 seconds, and she also took first the long jump with a distance of 14 feet-10.5 inches. Fellow junior Danyelle Engels won the discus (103 feet-7 inches) and the javelin (89 feet-10 inches). In shot put, sophomore Kelly Donlan claimed first with a distance of 31 feet-8 inches. In the triple jump, junior Tirzah Bloomquist earned first at 32 feet-4.75 inches. Sophomore Avery Bauman cleared a height of 7 feet-6 inches to take first in the pole vault. The 4x100-meter relay team earned first place with a time of 53.3 seconds.
