The Warriors’ softball squad won the only game that it played last week by defeating Haddam-Killingworth to improve their record to 7-4 on the season. Valley now needs one more win to qualify for postseason play.
On May 3, Valley traveled to H-K and beat the Cougars 9-3. The Warriors scored three runs in the top of the first, and then H-K got one back in the bottom of the inning. Each team added another run in the third inning, but in the fifth and sixth innings, Valley pulled away by scoring two and three runs, respectively.
Pitcher Addy Bullis earned the win on the mound for the Warriors and also went 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored. Senior captain Julia Jenkins went 3-for-4 with a triple and a double, four RBI, and a run scored. Junior Alex Figuenick was 1-for-2 and drove in two runs.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Valley Regional played two games last week and won them both to move to 10-1 for the year.
In their first match, the Warriors faced off against Morgan at the Indian River Complex in Clinton and won 7-4 on May 2.
Two days later, Valley went up against Cromwell at home and drubbed the Panthers 17-1. The Warriors scored three goals in the first period, tacked on eight more in the second, and then netted six goals in the third to get their 17. Scoring goals for Valley were Davis Burleson with six, Rocky Harpin with five, and Jonathan Brophy with four, plus Ryan Davis and Soren Frantz each had one goal. Cole also had eight assists, while Harpin, Brophy, and Davis each had two. Burleson and Jacob Azzinaro added one assist apiece.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Valley had three matchups this past week and won two of them to move to 3-5 on the season.
On May 2, the Warriors hosted the Morgan Huskies and doubled them up 18-9. In its next game, Valley lost a close game at Haddam-Killingworth, 15-14, on May 3. The next day, the Warriors faced off against St. Bernard and won 12-6.
Crew
The Valley crew team sent 17 athletes to the Saratoga Invitational Regatta held at Saratoga Lake on April 28-29. This high school regatta is the largest in the Northeast with more than 60 schools competing and more than 1,300 athletes participating.
The girls’ first varsity coxed four boat had times of 6:38 and 6:18. The girls’ second varsity coxed four shell recorded times of 8:13 and 6:52. The girls’ third varsity coxed four boat posted a time of 8:44. The girls’ championship lightweight coxed four shell finished with time of 7:10.
The girls’ varsity coxed eight shell had a time of 8:17, pulling into seventh place in exciting fashion during the last minute of the race. The Warriors’ team of eight rowers consisted of Emily Hutchison, Lily O’Neil, Iris Chirinos, Sabrina Nucci, Liza Miezejeski, Rachel Dona, Chloe Grabowski, and Maaren Quale. Courtlin Sicignamo occupied the coxswain position.
Other Valley crew members in attendance included Ally Brennan, Caitlyn Bouchard, Electra Cassells, Jenna Talbot, Maddy Just, Maddy Meyer, Sage Tisdale, and Tessa LeMay.
Boys’ Tennis
The Warriors played three matches last week, winning one of them for an 9-3 mark on the year.
Valley’s first match was at home against Old Lyme and the Warriors lost 4-3 on May 1. In singles play, junior Jeff Riggio won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1; and senior Nate Gagnon won 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 position. Even though senior Ben Kilby did not win his match, Head Coach Bunny Logan said that the contest was a sight to behold as it went for two-and-a-half hours before his opponent, Jeff Zhang of Old Lyme, claimed the victory, 7-5, 6-7, 7-5.
On May 2, the Warriors traveled to Westbrook and lost 6-1. Riggio won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
The next day, Valley faced off against North Branford and won in a sweep, 7-0. Riggio won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles; and Jones won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. The Warriors won the other matches via forfeit.
Girls’ Tennis
Valley had three matches last week and they won one of them, making their record 7-5 on the season.
On May 1, the Warriors were at Old Lyme, where they lost to the Wildcats 7-0.
The next day, Valley faced off against Westbrook at home and lost 6-1. In doubles play, junior Ellie Flynn and freshman Caroline Baldwin won 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot.
After that, the Warriors traveled to North Branford to match up against the Thunderbirds and won 4-3 on May 3. Callie Riggio secured a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 1 position in singles play. The Warriors dominated in doubles play by winning all three matches. Flynn and Baldwin won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1; the senior duo of Jenna Farley and Lindsey Lent earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2; and junior Isabelle Hansen and sophomore Allie Champion won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot.
Golf
The Warriors won one of their three matches last week to put their record at 2-5.
Valley’s first match was on May 2 against East Hampton at the Black Birch Country Club, where Valley won 196-213. The next day, the Warriors went up against Portland at the Portland Golf Course and lost 164-187. Finally, on May 4, Valley traveled to Black Hall Country Club to play against Old Lyme and lost 164-186
