Rams’ Softball Flips the Switch by Winning Four of Five; Boys’ Lacrosse Takes Two

Softball

The Old Saybrook softball team claimed victory in both of its games last week to improve to 5-9 on the season. The Rams have won four of their last five contests.

Old Saybrook prevailed 12-9 at Portland on May 3. Portland scored four runs in the first inning, but was held in check the rest of the way by the Rams’ Carly Michaud. Senior Megan Schulmeister got the Rams going in the first inning with a triple, and she was then driven in by junior Chloe Root. Hannah LeMire went 2-for-3 with a double, a single, and three RBI. Root, Michaud, senior Kirsten King, senior Anna Joseph, sophomore Maeve Foley, and sophomore Sarah Howley each had a single for Old Saybrook.

The next day, the Rams were at home to play St. Bernard and won 20-6. St. Bernard held a 9-6 lead before the Rams scored 10 runs in the fifth inning. Root went 3-for-5 with a triple, two home runs, and four RBI; Schulmeister, Foley, Michaud, and Joseph all had two hits; plus LeMire and Sarah Howley hit doubles that drove in two runs. Freshman Taylor Cote made her second varsity appearance on the mound and picked up the win after coming in during the fourth inning. She also had a two-RBI single.

Baseball

Old Saybrook split its two games last week to stand with a record of 6-7 this year.

The Rams were home to battle Hale-Ray on May 1 and lost by a 5-3 final in nine innings. Dan Cote went 1-for-4 with a RBI.

On May 3, Old Saybrook traveled to Portland and won 7-6. Junior Ryan Dubord earned the win on the mound by scattering three hits and striking out six. Philip Ledwith went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a RBI, and three runs scored, while Dan Cote was 1-for-4 with a RBI double.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Old Saybrook was victorious in two of its three games last week to move to 3-8 on the year.

The Rams were at Cromwell and defeated the Panthers 15-6 on May 1. The Rams led 6-4 at halftime and then ran away with the game by outscoring Cromwell 9-2 in the second half. Scoring goals for the Rams were freshman Cameron Grillo with six, senior Christos Ellinas with four, senior Jack Olivieri with two, and senior John Guarnaccia, senior Tenzin Rabjam, and freshman Ian Mason with one each. Assisting on goals were Grillo, Ellinas, and Olivieri with three apiece, plus Rabjam with one. Keaton Roarick saved 9 of the 15 shots he faced in goal.

On May 4, Old Lyme came to Old Saybrook and defeated the Rams 8-5. On the scoresheet for Old Saybrook were senior Ashton Reina with two goals, plus Ellinas, Grillo, and Rabjam with one goal apiece. Senior Jefferson Yanza notched two assists, while Ellinas and Grillo had one assist each.

On May 6, the Rams hosted Bristol Eastern and won 13-0. Scoring goals for the Rams were Grillo with six, Ellinas with three, Reina with two, and Rabjam and Olivieri with one each. Grillo had three assists, Christos and Olivieri had two assists, while Yanza and Reina each had one assist.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Rams lost three matches last week to bring their record to 7-6.

Old Saybrook took a 19-7 loss at Branford on May 2. Scoring goals for Old Saybrook were freshman Izzy Sigersmith with four, junior Kendall Hartt with two, and sophomore Ally Kehlenbach with one. Senior Maggie Smith, sophomore Kelsey True, and sophomore Kathryn Spotts each had an assist.

On May 4, the Rams took a 15-5 defeat at Old Saybrook.

Two days later, Old Saybrook lost at Weston by a score of 13-5.

Boys’ Tennis

The Rams had four contests last week and won three of them to move to 11-2, while clinching a spot in the postseason.

Old Saybrook’s first contest was at Coginchaug and the Rams prevailed 5-2 on May 1. The next day, Old Saybrook hosted Cromwell and swept the match 7-0. On May 3, the Rams went up against undefeated Westbrook at home and took a 4-3 defeat. The next day, Old Saybrook hosted Suffield and won 6-1.

Girls’ Tennis

Old Saybrook collected two wins in three recent matches to put its record at 10-2 with a spot in postseason play. The Rams are currently in second place in the Shoreline Conference.

Old Saybrook defeated Coginchaug 4-3 at home on May 1. Senior Rosie Rothman won her match at the No. 1 singles position, 6-1, 6-1; junior Tanya Gianitsos grabbed a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2; senior Erin Stangel won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3; and senior Isabella Luciani won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.

The next day, the Rams went to Cromwell, where they defeated the Panthers 4-3. Gianitsos won, 6-0, 6-3; Stangel claimed a 6-2, 6-4, win; and Luciani won 6-3, 6-0. For doubles, the junior duo of Arina Jiang and Emma Rogan won 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot to clinch the victory for Old Saybrook.

On May 3, Old Saybrook was at Westbrook and took a 4-3 defeat. Stangel won 6-1, 6-2, and Luciani won her match, 6-2, 6-3. In doubles, Rogan and Jiang won another hard-fought, three-set match, this time by the final of 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Golf

The Rams won two matches against Hale-Ray last week to move to 6-5.

On May 2, the Rams hosted Hale-Ray at Fenwick Golf Course and beat the Noises 176-201. Old Saybrook’s Dean Nobile earned medalist honors by shooting a 42 on the par-35 course. Jack Walsh had the next lowest total with 44, while Jay DePalermo, Kyle Savino, and Jason Rothman all shot a 45.

The next day, Old Saybrook went to Fox Hopyard Golf Club to face Hale-Ray and triumphed by a 178-201 margin. Savino was medalist for the Rams by shooting 41. Rothman turned in a scorecard of 43, DePalermo shot a 46, Nobile scored a 48, and Walsh shot 51.
