Morgan Boys’ Tennis Wins Four Matches in Four Days; Softball Blows Out Wilbur Cross

Boys’ Tennis

The Huskies’ boys’ tennis team claimed four victories in as many days last week to improve to 11-3 on the year, while solidifying its spot in the postseason.

On May 1, Morgan matched up against East Hampton at home and won 6-1. In singles play, Sam Moran earned a win, 6-0, 6-3; junior Matt Newfield won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3; Garret Johnson was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 4; and Vincent Tino won by default at the No. 5 position. In doubles, sophomore Sean Cockley and junior Drew Marzano won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1; and Caleb Adams-Hull and Sam Daily won by default at No. 2.

The next day, the Huskies were home against Coginchaug and swept the Blue Devils 7-0. Moran earned the win, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1; Patrick Markovics defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2; Newfield won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3; Tino won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4; and Johnson won his match at No. 5 by default. In doubles play, Paddy Murray and Chris Nuzzo won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1; and Cockley and Marzano won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2.

On May 3, Morgan won 5-2 at Haddam-Killingworth. Newfield won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3; Johnson grabbed a win, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4; and Nuzzo won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. Caleb Adams-Hull and Sam Daily earned a win, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles; and Sean Cockley and Drew Marzano won by default at No. 2.

The Huskies battled Old Lyme on May 4 and won by a 4-3 final. In singles play, Moran claimed victory, 6-3, 6-4; at No. 1; while Newfield defeated his opponent 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-1. In doubles, Murray and Nuzzo won 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1; and Cockley and Marzano earned the win, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2.

Girls’ Tennis

The Huskies won one of their three recent contests to move to 3-9.

On May 1, Morgan was at East Hampton and earned the 5-2 triumphe. In singles play, Emma Phelps grabbed a victory, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 1 position; and junior Yashveen Rai won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3. As for doubles, Brenna Andrews and Lily Cummings won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1; at No. 2 doubles, Becca Cockley and Ingrid Rodriguez won their matchup, 6-2, 7-5; and Bea Atengco and Melanie Corretti won by default.

Two days later, the Huskies hosted Haddam-Killingworth and lost 4-3. Rai defeated her opponent 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. In doubles, Andrews and Cummings won 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 1 position; and Atengco and Corretti won 7-6, 6-4 at No. 3

Softball

Morgan played two games last week and gained a split to move to 6-7 on the season.

On May 1, Huskies hosted Wilbur Cross and won 13-2. Two days later, Morgan lost to North Branford at home, 11-3.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Morgan competed in a tri-meet at Old Lyme with Westbrook on May 2 and several athletes earned first-place finishes for the Huskies.

In the triple jump, junior Juan Avila earned first with a distance of 38 feet-2 inches. Junior Thomas Southwood claimed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.0 seconds. Junior Anes Gadun claimed first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.67 seconds, as well as the 110-meter hurdles at 17.73. The quartet of junior Patrick Wilson, junior Henry Southwood, freshman Chayse Lofgren, and junior Thomas Southwood placed first in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:54.32.

Girls Outdoor Track

Morgan earned some first-place honors at a recent tri-meet in Old Lyme.

Freshman Taylor Wyatt placed first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.91 seconds, and she also took first in the 200-meter dash at 27.3. In the 400-meter dash, junior Courtney Viglione earned first with the time of 1:05.83. Junior Kate Daley won the 3,200-meter run by finishing in 11:47.51. Senior Alyssa Robinson claimed first in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.3 seconds. In the high jump, junior Mikayla Mancini and freshman Charlotte Davenport tied for first place by clearing 4 feet-6 inches. Viglione, junior Allison Gardner, freshman Maura Kelly, and sophomore Issy Ranaudo placed first in the 4x400-meter relay (4:27.92). In the 4x800 relay, Daley, Gardner, Kelly, and Ranaudo grabbed first at 10:35.5.

Boys’ Golf

The Huskies took two defeats last week and are now 4-6 this spring.

On May 1, Morgan was up against Coginchaug at Lyman Orchards Golf Club, where Morgan shot a 192 and the Blue Devils scored a 167. Jack Bugg and Burton Caldwell both shot a 43 to lead Morgan. Next was Olivia Powers with a 49 and Ryan Powers with a 57.

Two days later, the Huskies faced Old Lyme and took a 167-184 defeat. Caldwell (40), Bugg (41), Olivia Powers (51), and Ethan Tessman (52) accounted for the Huskies’ score.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Huskies played two games at home last week and dropped a pair of decisions to move to 6-7.

Morgan took a 7-4 loss to Valley Regional on May 2 and then lost 16-3 against Haddam-Killingworth two days later.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Morgan lost two road recent road games and is now 0-11. The Huskies lost to Valley Regional by an 18-9 final on May 2 and then dropped a 19-6 contest against Haddam-Killingworth on May 4.
