Baseball

The Indians’ baseball squad was an offensive juggernaut last week by putting up 59 runs between its three victories to improve to 10-4, while also qualifying for the State Tournament.

Guilford made states in its first game of the week and did so in convincing fashion with an 18-0 victory over Career on May 1. Kevin Cargos pitched six innings and had six strikeouts to get the win. Charlie Danaher hit a grand slam and had five RBI, Logan Hitchcock cracked a solo homer, and Logan Driscoll notched two RBI for the Indians.

“We are on our third game in four days, and we play the next two days, so it was important for us to get some length out of our starting pitching. Kevin gave us exactly what we needed. He was tremendous, throwing a ton of strikes and keeping the game 0-0 through three innings until we found our offense,” said Head Coach Brian Hayden. “We got some good at-bats in the fourth from Hitchcock, John Luke Cianciolo, and Driscoll. From that point, our offense came together. Charlie put a great swing on the ball with the bases loaded for a home run, and that put the game out of reach. Getting win No. 8 was big for us today.”

The Indians kept the offense coming with a 20-4 win versus divisional foe Cross that put them at 3-1 in the Oronoque.

Guilford won another rout with a 21-0 final over West Haven the next day. The Indians pounded out 21 hits in the victory. Hitchcock went 4-for-4 with four RBI, Matt Donlan was 3-for-3 with three RBI and five runs scored, plus Kam Miles and Cianciolo each had two hits and two RBI. Jack Strand worked four scoreless innings for the win.

“The past three days, we’ve scored 60 runs in three games, and we have taken advantage of some mistakes, but for the most part, have put great swings on the ball,” Coach Hayden said. “Our guys showed up tonight with a purpose. In the first inning, Kam Miles had a great at-bat and took the ball the other way to get us two runs. In the second inning, Charlie Danaher put a ball in the right-center gap on a hit and run scoring two. From that point on, the hitting was contagious. Logan Hitchcock and Matt Donlan were locked in all night. When our guys trust the approach and their mechanics, they’re as good as anyone.”

Softball

Guilford recorded two victories last week to net itself a State Tournament berth with mark of 8-3. The Indians are also 3-1 in SCC Hammonasset Division.

The Indians took a 3-0 loss to Sacred Heart Academy on May 2. Kate Napieckowski’s infield single with the bases loaded brought the winning run home with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ava Gladwin had two hits for Guilford. Amanda King struck out eight and gave up only four hits in the loss.

Guilford rebounded with a 9-0 shutout of Branford the next day. King scattered three hits and struck out 12 for the win. She also went 2-for-3 with homer and two RBI at the plate. Jordyn Goldstein and Leah Kornguth each had three hits for Guilford. Emily Torre got the scoring going with a two-out RBI double in the first inning. Delaney Kenney contributed an RBI double.
