Baseball

H-K improved to 12-4 after nailing down two wins in three games last week.

The Cougars opened their week with a big 13-0 shutout of Valley Regional on May 1. Kyle Crandall led the Cougars with four hits, while Jackson Parmentier and Ross Meglin each had two hits to lead the 12-hit attack. Owen Marica and Jon Grasso combined on the four-hit shutout, with Marica striking out eight.

H-K then took a 4-3 loss to Coginchaug two days later. McGuire O’Sullivan led off the seventh with a single, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored on a two-out error to win it for Coginchaug. Marica had two hits and drove in a run for the Cougars.

The Cougars then blanked Hale-Ray 7-0 on May 6. Jon Civiello hit a two-run triple in the sixth and Jackson Parmentier had two hits and two runs scored for H-K. Marica pitched a three-hit shutout, doubled, and scored a run for the Cougars.

Softball

The Cougars won one of their three games last week and sport a strong mark of 10-3.

H-K took a 7-3 loss to Stafford on May 1. With one out in the third, Rachel Mauri drew a walk and was chased home by a Rachel Senechal triple. With two outs, Faith Mauri crushed a home run deep to left field to put the Cougars up 3-2. Stafford scored three runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth. Pitcher Brooke LaTouche entered the game in the fifth, and Adelle Biondi took the circle for the sixth. Stafford pitcher Hannah Davis grew stronger as the game wore on, holding H-K hitless through the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. In the seventh, pinch hitter Tori Rich slugged a two-out double, but was stranded on third when Davis got her ninth strikeout to end the game.

The Cougars lost a 9-3 contest to Valley Regional on May 3. H-K’s Faith Mauri (3-for-4, HR, 3 runs scored) lined a fastball to the deepest part of center field for a round-tripper to lead off the third inning. H-K hinted at a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh, when Mauri led off with a single and Ari Masotti followed with a RBI double. However, the final Cougars’ batter grounded out to end the game. Senechal had two hits.

H-K rebounded with a 9-5 win over Coginchaug on May 4. The Cougars drew first blood in the top of the second, when Ali Halligan singled to left and scored on Senechal’s single. Coginchaug put four runs on the board in third and made the score 5-1 in the fourth. Senechal opened the sixth by beating out a beautifully placed bunt, and Mauri followed with a single to center. Hannah Little moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, after which Masotti walked to load the bases. Shannon Nelson blasted a two-RBI double, and then Halligan followed with an RBI single. Rich then sent a pinch-hit single screaming through the right side of the infield to drive in what proved the game-winning run. H-K added two more runs when Senechal doubled. Little walked in the seventh and scored on a Halligan sacrifice fly. Winning pitcher Hannah Theriault relieved starting pitcher LaTouche in the fifth. Theriault allowed just one hit in the final three innings, with Senechal putting on a defensive clinic for five of the last nine outs.
