North Haven Softball Runs Win Streak to 11; Boys’ Lacrosse Wins Sixth Straight

Softball

The North Haven softball team won two nail-biters and posted a blowout last week to increase its winning streak to 11 consecutive games. The Indians edged both Foran and Lauralton Hall by 3-2 scores before defeating Sacred Heart Academy 18-1 to improve to 11-1 this season.

North Haven’s week started with a 3-2 home win over Foran on May 1. The Indians won the game in walk-off fashion when Olivia Peterson singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Peterson also hit a home run for North Haven in her first at-bat. The Indians had tied the game in the sixth on a double from junior catcher Caroline Gabrielle. Lauren Card allowed six hits for the win on the mound.

The following day, North Haven scored three runs in the second inning and held on for a 3-2 win against Lauralton Hall at home. Card gave up just six hits and she also had two hits at the dish. Peyton Davis drove home a pair of runs in the big second inning.

North Haven closed the week with its decisive victory at Sacred Heart Academy on May 3. Trailing 1-0 entering the sixth, the Indians broke loose for 12 runs and then tacked on six more in the seventh. Card earned her 10th win by pitching a four-hitter to go with three hits, including a double, and five RBI. Ariana DelVecchio went 3-for-4, Haylee Garthwait and Gigi Russo both went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Sarah Lombardi was 2-for-2, and Gabrielle had a double with three RBI.

Baseball

The Indians split a pair of recent matchups to stand at 9-4 for the year. North Haven edged Sheehan 2-1 on May 3 and dropped a 5-4 decision at Notre Dame-West Haven the following day.

Dom Onofrio singled home Vinny Anastasio with the winning run for a walk-off victory when the Indians defeated Sheehan. Anastasio had doubled earlier in the inning to set up Onofrio’s heroics. North Haven plated its first run in the first inning when Brendan Clark doubled home Peyton Farina, who doubled twice. Clark was the winning pitcher by striking out four batters in 1.2 innings in relief of Luca Lawrence, who allowed just one unearned run on two hits in 5.1 innings.

In the Notre Dame game, the Indians led 2-0, trailed 5-2, cut it to 5-4 in the fifth, but couldn’t get home the tying run. Steven Erbe went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Matt Solomon was 2-for-3 with a run, Farina doubled and scored, Clark singled and had a RBI, Kevin Lucey doubled, Chris Stevens scored two runs, and Matt Iovanne had a RBI. Preston Young pitched the first 5.2 innings before Griffin Bottomley got the last out in the sixth.

Girls’ Tennis

The Indians won all four of their matches last week to improve to 13-1 and solidify their spot in the Class M State Tournament. North Haven notched 4-3 decisions versus Lauralton Hall and Cheshire before defeating Nonnewaug (5-2) and Sacred Heart Academy (6-1). The Indians’ singles players went undefeated on the week with all four athletes winning their matches in straight sets.

North Haven started off by recording its first win versus Lauralton Hall in Bob Migliorini’s tenure as head coach. Julia Migliorini (6-1, 6-2), Olivia Hoyt (7-5, 6-4), Hillary Hoyt (6-3, 6-3), and Rachel Petry (6-1, 6-4) prevailed in straight sets to help the Indians get the 4-3 victory.

The same scenario played out in the Indians’ 4-3 win against Cheshire as Migliorini (6-0, 6-1), Olivia Hoyt (6-2, 6-2), Hillary Hoyt (6-1, 6-3), and Petry (6-0, 6-0) all claimed victory to lead North Haven. The win marked the second time that North Haven beat Cheshire by a 4-3 score this spring.

The following day, North Haven faced previously undefeated non-conference opponent Nonnewaug on the road and won 5-2. Migliorini (6-0, 6-0), Olivia Hoyt (6-1, 6-1), Hillary Hoyt (6-3, 6-2), and Petry (6-0, 6-2) were once again triumphant. Sejal Atluru and Lily Mezzi won a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 decision in the No. 2 doubles match.

Then on May 5, the Indians hosted Sacred Heart Academy at North Haven Health & Racquet Club and came out on top, 6-1. Migliorini earned another 6-0, 6-0 victory, Olivia Hoyt won 6-2, 6-0, sister Hillary was a 6-1, 6-1 victor, and Petry prevailed 6-1, 6-0. Atluru and Zoe Bowerman earned a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles, while the No. 3 tandem of Avery Hill and Katrina Nadolny took a three-setter by the final of 6-2, 1-6, 10-8.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Indians ran their win streak to six straight games and their record to 10-1 by posting two more victories last week. North Haven defeated East Lyme 16-5 on May 1, after which the Indians edged Notre Dame-West Haven, 6-5, on the road on May 3.

Zack Orth had five goals with an assist, Bowen Brennan scored three goals and dished off four assists, while PJ Saracino scored three goals and had two assists in the East Lyme victory. Korbin Pecora scored a pair of goals to go with two assists, Tom Dodge had two goals with an assist, and Matt Crisco added a goal for North Haven, which received seven saves in net from Dustin Byrnes.

Girls’ Lacrosse

North Haven stands at 5-4 after splitting a pair of recent decisions. The Indians claimed an 8-6 win on May 2 at Sheehan before dropping a 16-12 home contest against Shelton on May 4.

Kylie Brandt had four goals and Annie Uyeki scored three goals in the Sheehan victory. Meg Christoforo added a goal, while Samantha Langner made 13 saves to get the win in net.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Indians swept a pair of tri-matches last week and now own a record of 10-3.

On May 2, North Haven competed in Guilford and defeated both the host Indians (90-60) and Foran (82-68). Omar Gebril took first place in the 200 (23.0 seconds) and the 400 (50.6), while Ethan Okwuosa won both the long jump (19-3.75) and the triple jump (39-6.75). The Indians’ other first-place finishers were Robert Farley in the 110 high hurdles (17.3), Josh Bryson in the 300 intermediate hurdles (46.0), Kyle Maruca in the discus (113 feet-8.75 inches), and Eric Milliard for the shot put with a toss of 45-2.75.

Two days later, the Indians hosted a tri-meet against two non-conference opponents. North Haven claimed a 128-22 win over Platt Tech and defeated Amistad 131-19. Gebril was once again a double victor as he claimed first in the javelin (134-1.75) and the triple jump (38-1.25). Jianni Snipes won the 100-meter dash in 11.5 seconds, Joe Urtel took first in the 300 hurdles with a 49.9, Jack Opramolla prevailed in the 400 by running 55.3, Jonathan Goodrich was first in the 800 at 2:18.2, Jordan Tong won the 1,600 with a 4:59.5, and Eric Spignesi claimed top honors for the pole vault by clearing 9 feet-6 inches. Also taking first were Farley in the 100 hurdles (16.6), Bryson in the high jump (5-6), Maruca for the discus (123-5), and Milliard in the shot put (44-10). North Haven’s 4x400 relay of Bryson, Opramolla, Urtel, Tong placed first with a time of 3:58.1, while the 4x400 of Cory Reilly, Jackson Frank, Aidan Bergin, and Goodrich ran a 10:16 to take first place.

Then on May 6, North Haven sent several athletes to the Middletown Invitational, where Gebril took third place in the 800 with a time of 2:00.53.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

North Haven swept a tri-match at Foran on May 2 by defeating both the host Lions (114-27) and Guilford (89-62). The Indians improved to 10-1 with these two victories.

Later in the week, the Indians were well represented at the Middletown Invitational. Erica Marriott took first place in the long jump (18-5) and was second in the 200, Sarah Vanacore placed third in the shot put (37-5), Elise Symon finished third in the 1,600 (5:24.45), and North Haven’s 4x100 relay of Sammy Curcio, Ashley Brown, Camille Sahirul, and Marriott came in third place by running 51.47.

Golf

The Indians picked up a win versus East Haven before taking a few defeats last week. North Haven is now 3-6.

On May 2, North Haven posted a 182-205 home victory over East Haven at Wallingford Country Club. Gianni Abate earned medalist honors with his low scorecard of 44, while Matt Mezzano and Steve Pugliese were right behind with scores of 45. Kameron DeMartin shot a 48 to round out the Indians’ scoring, and Alex Kirtland also had a solid round with a 49.

The following day, North Haven hosted non-conference opponent Hall of West Hartford and took a 181-190 defeat. The Indians’ total was posted by Mezzano (45), Pugliese (47), Abate (49), and DeMartin (49), with Sean Quinn shooting a 65.

Then on May 4, the Indians had a tri-meet at Pine Orchard Country Club in Branford, where they shot a 191 to drop decisions against the host Hornets and Hamden, which both scored a 186. Abate scored a 45, Mezzano had a 46, plus DeMartin and Pugliese both shot scores of 50.
