Valley Softball on Three-Game Win Streak; Crew Gets Out New Gear at Pomfret

Softball

The Warriors’ softball squad claimed victory both of its games last week to bring its record to 6-4 on the season.

On April 24, Valley played at Portland and dominated in a 15-0 victory. Pitchers Addy Bullis and Lauren Allen combined for a two-hitter with eight strikeouts in the five-inning win. Junior Rylee DaRe went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, plus senior Julia Jenkins was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, and a RBI. Freshman Carlee Kirla was 2-for-2 with a triple, two runs scored, and four RBI.

The Warriors then were back at home against Cromwell and prevailed 9-8. The game was tied with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, when sophomore Kelli Schaefer singled home the winning run. Bullis struck 14 batters to get to get the win on the mound.

Baseball

Valley Regional played three contests last week and won two of them to move to 5-7.

On April 24, the Warriors lost at home against Westbrook, 9-2. On April 28, Valley hosted Creed-Hillhouse and won by a 18-4 margin. For their final game, the Warriors won 4-1 in North Branford.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Valley played three games last week and came out on top in all three to improve to 8-1.

In their first match, the Warriors faced off against North Branford and won 11-10 on April 27. After three quarters, the Thunderbirds were up by a goal, but the Warriors outscored North Branford 3-1 in the fourth to seal the victory. Senior captain Jonathan Brophy scored four goals on five shots for Valley. Sophomore Sean Cole netted one goal and had four assists, freshman Davis Burleson added three goals, and senior captain Ryan Davis had two goals and two assists. Senior goalkeeper Jake Azzinaro stopped 19 of the 28 shots that came his way.

The next day, Valley hosted Morgan and won 12-9. Brophy had six goals for the Warriors, while Cole had two goals and five assists. Azzinaro made 20 saves on 29 shots.

On April 29, the Warriors were on the road to play Haddam-Killingworth and triumphed 12-7. The Cougars led 5-3 at halftime before the Warriors scored nine goals in the latter stanza. Cole scored two goals on two shots and assisted on seven goals in the win, senior Rocky Harpin scored five goals and added three assists, Brophy scored five goals, plus Burleson had two goals and three assists. Azzinaro came up with 16 saves on 23 shots.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Valley picked up its first win of the season lat week and is now 1-4. On April 24, the Warriors recorded an 11-10 victory at Shoreline Conference rival Morgan. In their next game, the Warriors were at North Branford and lost 16-3 on April 27. Two days later, Valley went up against Northwest Catholic and lost 14-9.

Boys’ Tennis

The Warriors played three matches last week and were victorious in all three for a mark of 8-1.

Valley’s first match was at East Hampton, where the Warriors triumphed 7-0 on April 24. In singles play, junior Jeff Riggio earned a win, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1; senior Ben Kilby won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2; senior Hal Jones triumphed, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3; junior Kevin Baldwin won 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4; and senior Nate Gagnon got the 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5. In doubles, the senior duo of Jack Liggett and Buddy Haydu was victorious, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1; and juniors Jake Decker and Matt Martinez won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.

On April 27, the Warriors matched up against North Branford at home and won 7-0. Riggio won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1; and Hal Jones won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Valley earned the rest of the victories by default.

The next day, Valley faced Haddam-Killingworth and won 6-1. Riggio won 6-2, 6-1; Kilby won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2; Jones won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3; Jack Lima grabbed a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4; and Gagnon prevailed 6-1, 6-1. In doubles, Liggett and Baldwin were victorious, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 1 spot.

Crew

The Valley Regional crew team had a strong start to the 2017 season at its first regatta that was hosted by Pomfret Academy on April 22.

Four boats participated for the Warriors, and all four boats took third place in their respective category races. This regatta marked the Warriors’ first race with their new equipment. The athletes who competed for Valley included Emily Hutchison, Emma Carey, Courtlin Sicignamo, Maddy Just, Tessa LeMay, Kim Berardis, Rachel Dona, Allie Gilbert, Caitlyn Bouchard, Lily O’Neil, Maaren Quale, Maddy Meyer, Chelsea Martinson, Iris Chirinos, Jenna Talbot, Kelly Littler, Sabrina Nucci, Sage Tisdale, and Eric Vilcheck.

Golf

The Warriors hit the links for a match last week and lost to Coginchaug to put their record at 1-3.

The match was at home for Valley at Fox Hopyard Country Club on April 27, and the Warriors were defeated by Coginchaug, 168-200. Jake Patterson had the best score for Valley with 46. Cory Craco followed him a 49, Jack O’Brien had 52, and Alex Fortier scored a 53.
