Knights’ Girls’ Tennis Continues to Win; Track Teams Win a Few, Too


Girls’ Tennis

The Westbrook girls’ tennis squad claimed victories in both of last week’s contests to improve to 9-1 on the season.

Westbrook matched up at home against Morgan and won 6-1 on April 24. In singles, senior Casey Burns triumphed 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1; sophomore Sara Farnoli claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the No. 2 spot; and senior Aerial Ulanowicz won in a marathon, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7), at No. 4. In doubles play, juniors Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1; sophomore Savannah Marshall and junior Victoria Koplas earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2; and the junior duo of Lexi Vumback and Alyssa Esposito won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.

On April 28, Westbrook faced Coginchaug at home and was victorious, 5-2. Burns won 6-0, 6-0; Farnoli posted a 6-1, 6-2 win; and freshman Sarah Davey came back to win 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) at No. 3. For doubles, Marshall and Koplas won 6-3, 7-6 (7-4); and Vumback and Esposito grabbed a 7-5, 6-4 win.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Knights’ were at Haddam-Killingworth for a recent meet against the host Cougars, as well as Hale-Ray and Portland. Westbrook won against Hale-Ray (106-21) and also defeated Portland (106-28) to go with a 91-59 loss to H-K.

Junior Danyelle Engels hit the trifecta by winning the shot put with a distance of 33 feet-1 inch, the discus at 114-8, and the javelin with a toss of 90-2. In the 100-meter dash, junior Erin Metcalfe won with a time of 13.4 seconds. In the high jump, freshman Alexandra Young earned a first-place tie with H-K’s Coady by clearing 4-6. Sophomore Avery Bauman cleared a height of 7-9 in the pole vault.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Westbrook competed at a quad-meet against Haddam-Killingworth, Hale-Ray, and Portland last week. The Knights beat Portland (93-21) and Hale-Ray (91-21), while losing to H-K (91-53).

Junior Andrew Naccaratto claimed first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.4 seconds and the 200 with a 24.2. In the 400, junior Sean Scully took first with a time of 56.3. Senior Jay Donlan won first place in shot put with a distance of 40 feet-4 inches and also won the javelin at 136-1. In the discus, junior Vincent Dyer’s distance of 134-10 earned him first place. In the high jump, senior Maxwell Morris cleared 5-8 for the victory.

Baseball

Westbrook had two games last week and won one of them to move to 2-8.

On April 24, the Knights prevailed 9-2 at Valley Regional. Senior Matt Gallagher went 5-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, freshman Jack Farrell was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, and junior Jack Hayes added a run and a RBI to his 2-for-4 performance. Sophomore Kyle Robison earned the win on the mound by pitching a complete game.

Westbrook came back home to face Haddam-Killingworth and lost 14-2. Sophomore Cameron Marshall went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Robison was 2-for-3, and sophomore Connor Cruz went 2-for-4.

Softball

The Knights played four games last week and took four defeats to drop to 3-9.

Westbrook opened the week at Old Saybrook and lost 12-9 on April 24. Senior Biance Ferrucci was 3-for-4 with two runs, and freshman Madison Marshall was 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.

On April 27, the Knights were at Morgan and lost 21-7. Ferrucci went 2-for-2 with a walk, a RBI, and two runs scored, while senior Alexa Mulvihill went 1-for-2 with a run scored and three RBI.

The next day, the Knights were home to play Coginchaug and took a 12-1 loss. Mulvihill was 1-for-2 with a RBI.

On April 29, Westbrook dropped a 17-4 contest versus Hale-Ray. Junior Kylee Magee was 2-for-3, and freshman Jamie Merola was 1-for-1 with two walks, a run scored, and a RBI for the Knights.
